Chapter 1 - The Box of Secrets

The rain lashed against the warped plywood of the shack, finding every crack and dried-up knot in the wall. Inside, the kerosene lamp cast a flickering, bruised light over the dirt floor.
Monica sat on the edge of the sagging mattress, her fingers gently tracing the delicate, blue-veined cheek of the infant sleeping soundly in the cardboard box. Emily and Grace sat cross-legged beside her, watching her every move with wide, anxious eyes.
"Mom, can we keep him?" Grace asked again, her voice barely louder than the patter of the rain outside. "We found him fair and square behind the market. He doesn't have anyone."
Monica looked up at her daughters, her heart heavy with a mixture of profound sorrow and a strange, unbidden warmth. She knew the brutal math of their lives. They had barely enough stale bread and boiled potatoes to keep themselves alive, let alone an infant who needed specialized formula, diapers, and warmth. Yet, looking at the child’s serene face—unblemished by the harshness of the world he had been thrown into—she couldn't bring herself to say the words that logic demanded.
"We can't just keep him hidden forever, girls," Monica said softly, her voice thick with emotion. "Someone left him there for a reason. And somewhere out there, there's a mother—or police who will look for him."
"No!" Emily shook her head fiercely, tears welling in her eyes. "If we give him to the police, they'll put him in a cold system. They won't love him like we do. We named him Leo. Because he's brave like a little lion."
Monica stared at her eldest daughter, seeing the fierce, protective determination in her eyes. It was the same look Monica wore every single day as she scoured the city's alleys for bottles and cans to feed her family.
"Leo," Monica whispered, testing the name on her tongue. She reached down and gently lifted the baby's tiny wrist.
That was when she noticed it.

Tucked snugly against his small arm, partially hidden by the soiled blanket, was a heavy, custom-engraved platinum hospital identification bracelet. Monica carefully slid it out into the dim lamplight.
Engraved in sharp, unmistakable relief were the initials A.V.V. and a string of private serial numbers followed by a crest that made Monica’s breath hitch in her throat. It wasn't just a standard hospital band. It was the private crest of the Vance Corporation—one of the most powerful, ruthless technological and industrial conglomerates in the country.
