Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Door

It was late Thursday evening when a sleek, black armored SUV idled quietly at the end of the unpaved road near the Walker shack.

Lena had just put Leo to sleep in a makeshift bassinet fashioned from a laundry basket when a heavy, authoritative knock rattled the wooden door.

Before Lena could reach for the handle, the door was shoved open. Two men in sharp suits stepped into the cramped, dimly lit room. Behind them stood Marcus Sterling himself, his face a mask of cold arrogance, flanked by private security guards.

“Well, well,” Marcus sneered, looking around the dilapidated shack with undisguised disgust. “It seems my uncle’s precious heir has been hiding out in a pigsty.”

Lily and June screamed, scrambling backward behind the table as Lena stepped protectively in front of the laundry basket.

“Get out of my house!” Lena shouted, her voice shaking with adrenaline. “You have no right to be here!”

“Save the dramatics, woman,” Marcus said, stepping forward. He didn't care about the baby's safety; his primary objective was to eliminate the witnesses and secure the child before his uncle’s search party arrived. “Hand over the boy, and I won't have you and your little alley-rats arrested for kidnapping and extortion.”

“He isn't yours to take!” Lena screamed, refusing to yield an inch.

One of the guards stepped forward, shoving Lena violently aside. As she crashed against the wooden shelves, Lily shrieked, throwing herself over the laundry basket to shield Leo.

Suddenly, the wail of police sirens tore through the night air, followed by the blinding sweep of high-beam headlights flooding the dirt yard.

“Federal Agents! Nobody move!” a voice boomed through a megaphone outside.

Marcus’s face drained of color. The backup he hadn't anticipated—led by Richard Sterling himself alongside federal child protection units—had arrived.
