Chapter 1 - The Alleyway Miracle

The morning air in Cleveland was biting and sharp at 6:18 AM on that Monday, carrying the heavy scent of industrial soot and wet asphalt. Behind McKinley’s Market, five-year-old Lily Walker knelt beside a towering stack of sodden cardboard boxes, her small fingers curling around something soft.

Her twin sister, June, stood nearby with a bruised apple in one hand and a torn plastic bag in the other.

“Lily? What is it?” June whispered, peering over a stack of crates.

Lily didn’t reply. She carefully pulled back a sagging panel of damp cardboard, revealing a tiny bundle wrapped in a frayed gray blanket. A newborn boy, his skin flushed pink from the cold, looked up with wide, glassy dark eyes. His tiny fist pressed against his chest as he let out a weak, heartbreaking cry.

“Oh my God,” June breathed, dropping the apple.

The alley was quiet except for the distant growl of transport trucks. No frantic mother appeared. No security guard shouted at them. Abandoned behind a supermarket dumpster, the infant had been left to the mercy of the elements.

Without hesitation, Lily shrugged off her thin knitted sweater, layering it over the gray blanket to trap what little warmth she could. She scooped the baby into her arms. He weighed almost nothing at all. As soon as he felt the secure contour of her small chest, the infant stopped crying, nuzzling blindly against her shirt.

“He likes you,” June whispered in awe.

“He’s freezing, June,” Lily said, her eyes resolute. “We’re taking him home.”
