Chapter 2 - The Shack on the Edge of Town

Their home was a makeshift dwelling patched together from plywood, sheet metal, and discarded tarps on the edge of an abandoned industrial yard on Cleveland’s east side. Inside, the floor was packed dirt covered by faded rugs, and warmth came only from a small, dented space heater that hummed dangerously in the corner.
When Lily and June pushed open the warped wooden door, their mother, Lena, looked up from the table where she had been scraping the last dry crumbs of an old loaf of bread. At thirty-one, Lena’s eyes held the deep exhaustion of a woman fighting a daily war against poverty.
She opened her mouth to scold them for taking so long, but the words died in her throat as Lily stepped into the dim light, holding a bundle against her chest.
“Lily… what is that?” Lena asked, her voice trembling.
“We found him behind McKinley’s Market, Mom,” June blurted out, tears welling in her eyes. “Someone threw him away. We couldn't leave him to freeze.”
Lena dropped to her knees, pulling the blanket back with shaking hands. The baby whimpered softly. As a mother who had scraped and starved to keep her own twins alive, Lena felt her heart shatter into a thousand pieces.

“Oh, my sweet baby,” Lena whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks. She immediately took the infant into her arms, warming his tiny blue feet in her palms. “Who could do this to you?”
They didn't know it yet, but across the city lines in an opulent lakeside mansion in Bratenahl, a multi-billionaire industrialist named Richard Sterling was tearing his estate apart, surrounded by frantic security teams and local authorities, searching desperately for his kidnapped infant grandson—the sole heir to the Sterling shipping empire.
