Chapter 5 - DAWN OF THE BOSS

The sun began to rise over Chicago, casting a soft, golden glow over the smoking ruins of the Bolaro estate's front gates. The heavy wail of police sirens had faded hours ago. The authorities, heavily influenced by Lorenzo's political connections and completely presented with overwhelming evidence of the Romanos' unprovoked attack, had cleared the scene.

Camilla and Dr. Crane were in federal custody, their full confessions recorded by Lorenzo's security cameras. Domenico Romano was dead, and with him, the rival syndicate was utterly decapitated, ensuring peace on the streets for the first time in a decade.

Inside the nursery, the air was finally still.

I sat in a plush rocking chair near the window, holding Nico. The morning light washed over his peaceful face. His color was completely normal, his breathing deep and healthy. The IV lines had been removed. He was, miraculously, just a normal, sleeping baby again.

The door to the nursery pushed open softly.

Lorenzo walked in. He had showered and changed out of his blood-soaked clothes, wearing a simple pair of dark slacks and a white button-down shirt. The heavy, terrifying aura of the crime boss had receded, leaving behind an exhausted, profoundly grateful father.

He walked over to the rocking chair and knelt beside me, looking down at his son.

"Dr. Aris ran the final blood panels," Lorenzo said softly, not wanting to wake the baby. "The toxin is completely gone. His heart is strong. He’s going to have a perfectly normal life."

I smiled, a tear slipping down my cheek. "He’s a fighter, Lorenzo. Just like his father."

Lorenzo looked up at me. His dark eyes were soft, completely stripped of their usual armor. He reached out, gently placing his large, calloused hand over mine where it rested on Nico’s blanket.

"He’s alive because of you, Maya," Lorenzo whispered. "You saw what the best doctors in the city missed. You stood up to armed men. You protected him when the world was literally burning down around us. I have wealth. I have power. But I have never met anyone with your courage."

My heart fluttered under his intense gaze. "I'm a NICU nurse. Protecting babies is what I do."

"You are much more than a nurse," Lorenzo said, his thumb gently tracing the back of my hand. "Camilla was right about one thing. I buried myself in my grief. I built walls of ice around my heart, and I let snakes into my home because I was too blind to see them. You shattered that ice, Maya. You brought light back into this house."

He leaned closer, the scent of expensive soap and gunpowder lingering on his skin.

"I don't trust anyone in this world anymore," Lorenzo confessed, his voice thick with emotion. "But I trust you with my life. And I trust you with his. I don't want you to be just an employee, Maya. I want you to stay. Stay here with us. Let me protect you, the way you protected him."

I looked down at Nico, sleeping so soundly in my arms, and then up into the eyes of the most dangerous man in Chicago—a man who had ripped the world apart to keep us safe. I had walked into this house a lonely, overworked nurse, expecting to do a job and leave. Instead, I had found a purpose, a child I loved fiercely, and a man who saw me as an equal in a world of shadows.

"I'm not going anywhere, Lorenzo," I whispered softly.

May you like

Lorenzo leaned forward, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss to my forehead. In the quiet morning light, the boss of the Chicago underworld finally found his peace, and I finally found my family.

THE END
