Chapter 3 - THE RIVAL'S STRIKE

The sheer force of the explosion sent me stumbling backward. I hit the cold concrete wall, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs. Through the thick basement ceiling, the terrifying, staccato rhythm of automatic gunfire erupted, echoing like thunder through the estate.
"Rocco!" Lorenzo roared over the noise, drawing a heavy, suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster. "Secure this room! Do not let either of them out of those chairs! If the Romanos breach this floor, put a bullet in both of them before they can take them back."
"Yes, Boss!" Rocco shouted, racking the slide of an assault rifle and taking a defensive position by the heavy steel door.
Lorenzo turned to me, his eyes glowing like embers in the red emergency light. He grabbed my arm, his grip iron-tight but surprisingly careful.
"We need to get to the nursery," Lorenzo said, his voice cutting through the panic flooding my mind. "The Romanos won't stop at killing my men. Domenico knows Nico is my weakness. He’s sending an execution squad directly to the third floor to finish what Camilla started."
"But the stairs will be flooded with gunmen!" I panicked, my mind flashing to the tiny, helpless baby lying in his crib upstairs. "We won't make it up three flights!"
"We aren't taking the stairs," Lorenzo said grimly. He pulled me toward the back wall of the basement. He pressed his hand against a seemingly solid concrete panel. A biometric scanner flashed green, and a hidden door slid open, revealing a narrow, claustrophobic maintenance shaft with a steel ladder leading straight up into the darkness.
"Climb," he ordered. "This shaft runs directly behind the walls of the nursery. Go!"
I didn't hesitate. Adrenaline fueled my limbs as I grabbed the freezing steel rungs and began pulling myself upward into the pitch-black shaft. Lorenzo followed directly beneath me, the heavy steel door sliding shut behind him, plunging us into total darkness.
The climb felt like an eternity. The walls of the mansion shook violently around us. I could hear men screaming, the shattering of priceless glass, and the heavy thud of boots running across the hardwood floors on the levels we passed.
"Keep moving, Maya," Lorenzo’s voice echoed softly from below, steady and commanding. "Don't look down. Just focus on your hands."
My lungs burned by the time my head bumped against a wooden panel at the top of the shaft. Lorenzo reached up past my legs and pushed a hidden latch. The panel popped open, spilling moonlight into the shaft.
We tumbled out into Lorenzo’s private master bedroom, which connected directly to the nursery through a set of double doors.
The estate was in complete chaos. Outside the massive bedroom windows, the front courtyard was ablaze. Several vehicles were on fire, casting long, dancing shadows across the bedroom walls.
I scrambled to my feet and threw open the doors to the nursery.
Dr. Aris was crouched behind the heavy mahogany changing table, holding a small revolver in his trembling hands. Nico was still in his crib, miraculously sleeping through the muffled sounds of war outside, his tiny body wrapped tightly in a thick blanket.
"They breached the second floor!" Dr. Aris gasped as we ran in. "I heard them shooting down the hallway! They’ll be here in seconds!"
Lorenzo moved with terrifying efficiency. He grabbed a heavy Kevlar vest from a hidden compartment behind a bookshelf and tossed it to Dr. Aris. Then, he pulled a second, smaller tactical vest and shoved it into my hands.
"Put this on," Lorenzo ordered. "Take Nico. Wrap him tight. Do not leave the center of this room. The walls are lined with ballistic steel, but the door is vulnerable."
"Lorenzo, there are too many of them!" I cried, strapping the heavy vest over my scrubs and rushing to the crib. I scooped Nico into my arms, pressing his warm, fragile body against my chest. He stirred slightly, letting out a soft whimper, but the lingering effects of the medication kept him heavily sedated.
"I have defended this family for ten years," Lorenzo said, ejecting the magazine of his pistol, checking the rounds, and slamming it back into place with a sharp metallic click. He stepped directly in front of the heavy nursery door, placing himself squarely between us and the hallway.
"No one touches my blood. No one touches you," Lorenzo promised, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that stole my breath.
Before I could respond, heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway outside.
"Check the nursery! The boss wants the kid dead!" a rough voice shouted through the wood.
The doorknob rattled aggressively. When it didn't give, a heavy boot kicked the door, splintering the frame.
I backed into the darkest corner of the room, crouching over Nico, turning my back to the door to shield him with the Kevlar vest.
"Get away from the door!" Lorenzo barked to Dr. Aris.
The heavy oak door exploded inward as three men dressed in tactical gear breached the room, assault rifles raised.
They never stood a chance.
Lorenzo didn't flinch. He didn't take cover. He stood like an avenging god of war in the center of the room. His pistol cracked three times in rapid, deafening succession. The precision was unnatural. All three men dropped to the floor before they could fire a single shot, their bodies hitting the marble with heavy, lifeless thuds.
But the noise drew more attention.
"They're in the nursery! Move up!" someone screamed from the stairwell.
"Maya," Lorenzo yelled, picking up an assault rifle from one of the fallen men. "Get in the panic room. Now."
He pressed a hidden button beneath the window sill. The large bookshelf on the far wall swung open smoothly, revealing a heavy steel vault door.
"What about you?" I screamed over the gunfire.
"I’m going to end the Romanos tonight," Lorenzo growled, stepping over the bodies and moving out into the hallway, directly into the line of fire.
The bookshelf swung shut, and the heavy steel door locked automatically, sealing Dr. Aris, Nico, and me inside a suffocating, soundproof box.
The sudden silence was deafening. Inside the panic room, a small monitor on the wall flickered to life, showing multiple camera feeds of the mansion.
I held Nico tight, my eyes glued to the screen showing the third-floor hallway.
I watched Lorenzo Bolaro fight for his home, for his son, and for the life we had just saved. He moved through the corridor with lethal, calculating grace. He wasn't just a father anymore; he was the apex predator of the Chicago underworld, unleashing years of repressed grief and rage onto the men who had dared to cross his threshold.
But as I watched him clear the hallway, a new feed caught my eye.
The camera in the main foyer showed the front doors being blown completely off their hinges.
Striding through the smoke and debris, surrounded by a dozen heavily armed men, was an older man in a pristine white suit. He held a silver-plated revolver in his hand, a cruel, satisfied smile plastered on his face.

Domenico Romano had arrived personally to watch the Bolaro empire burn.
And he was heading straight for the basement.
