Chapter 4 - FIRE AND BLOOD

Inside the steel-reinforced panic room, the air grew thick and heavy with tension. Nico shifted against my chest, his breathing even but shallow. I gently stroked his back, whispering soft assurances to a baby who couldn't hear me over the sounds of his own heartbeat. Dr. Aris sat rigidly on a metal bench, his eyes glued to the security monitors alongside me.
"My God," Dr. Aris breathed, pointing a shaking finger at the screen displaying the main foyer. "That’s Domenico Romano. He hasn't stepped foot outside his own compound in five years. If he’s here... he’s completely committed. He plans to slaughter everyone tonight and claim the territory."
I watched in horror as Domenico and his personal guard squad systematically cleared the ground floor, executing Lorenzo’s surviving men without hesitation. But they didn't head up the stairs toward the nursery. Instead, they moved purposefully toward the hidden elevator that led down to the basement.
"He’s going for Camilla," I realized, the blood draining from my face. "She told him she was compromised. He’s going down there to silence her and Dr. Crane so they can never testify or leak Romano secrets to the commission."
"Lorenzo doesn't know," Dr. Aris said frantically, tapping on the glass of the monitor showing the third floor.
Lorenzo was still engaged in a brutal firefight near the grand staircase on the second level, completely unaware that the boss of the rival family had infiltrated the lower levels. If Domenico secured the basement, he could use the maintenance shaft we had just climbed to bypass Lorenzo entirely and breach the nursery from behind.
"We have to warn him," I said, searching the small panic room. There was a communications panel on the wall. I slammed my hand onto the intercom button labeled 'Master Channel.'
"Lorenzo!" I screamed into the microphone, praying the earpiece he wore was still functioning. "Lorenzo, can you hear me?!"
Static hissed through the small speaker, followed by heavy gunfire, and finally, Lorenzo’s ragged voice.
"Maya! Are you secure? Is Nico hurt?!"
"We are safe, but you have to listen to me!" I yelled. "Domenico Romano is inside the house! He’s on the ground floor with a heavy squad, and they are heading for the basement!"
There was a fraction of a second of silence on the line.
"He’s going for the shaft," Lorenzo realized instantly, his tactical mind catching up. "If he gets into that shaft, he’ll bypass the vault doors. Maya... lock down the internal bolts on the panic room. Do not open them for anyone but me."
"Lorenzo, he has a dozen men with him!" I cried out, terrified that the man who had just trusted me with his son's life was walking into a suicide mission.
"Then they are going to die in the dark," Lorenzo replied coldly. The radio clicked off.
On the monitors, I watched Lorenzo abandon his position on the second floor. He moved like a ghost, slipping through secret passageways and servant corridors that only he knew, bypassing the main firefights and descending rapidly toward the sub-levels.
Meanwhile, the camera feed in the basement showed Domenico’s men blowing the heavy steel door off its hinges with breaching charges.
Smoke flooded the interrogation room. Rocco, the loyal guard Lorenzo had left behind, opened fire instantly, dropping two Romano soldiers before he was overwhelmed by a barrage of bullets. Rocco fell to the concrete, lifeless.
Domenico stepped into the room, waving the smoke away with his silver revolver.
Camilla and Dr. Crane were still tied to their chairs, screaming in terror as the gunfire deafened them.
"Domenico! Thank God!" Camilla sobbed, straining against her ties. "Lorenzo knows! He knows everything! Get us out of here!"
Domenico Romano smiled warmly, adjusting his white suit jacket. He walked slowly over to Camilla, reaching out to gently pat her cheek.
"You did very well, my dear," Domenico said, his voice dripping with false sympathy, perfectly captured by the basement’s hidden audio feed. "You broke his heart. You weakened his mind. You opened the door for me. I am very grateful."
"Untie me, please!" she begged.
"I’m afraid I can't do that, Camilla," Domenico sighed, stepping back and raising his silver revolver, aiming it squarely at her forehead. "Loose ends are terrible for business. And you, my dear, are the messiest end of all."
Camilla’s eyes widened in sheer horror. She finally realized the depth of her own foolishness. She had betrayed her own blood, murdered her sister, and attempted to kill a baby, all for the promise of power from a man who saw her as nothing more than a disposable tool.
"No! Please—!"
Before Domenico could pull the trigger, all the emergency red lights in the basement suddenly blew out in a shower of sparks.
The basement was plunged into absolute, impenetrable blackness.
"Flashlights! Illuminate the room!" Domenico shouted, his voice cracking with sudden panic.
Beams of high-powered tactical lights sliced through the dark, frantically searching the room. But in the three seconds it took them to turn their lights on, Lorenzo had arrived.
He didn't come through the front door. He dropped from an overhead ventilation duct directly into the center of Domenico’s men.
It was a massacre.
Watching it on the infrared security feed inside the panic room was like watching a horror movie where the monster was the man I was rooting for. Lorenzo moved with terrifying, brutal efficiency. In close quarters, firearms were a liability. He used a combat knife, striking from the shadows, dismantling Domenico’s elite guard one by one in absolute silence.
Men fired wildly into the dark, hitting their own comrades. Screams echoed through the audio feed, followed by the heavy thuds of bodies hitting the concrete.
Within two minutes, the gunfire ceased.
The emergency backup generator kicked in, casting a flickering, pale yellow light over the basement.
The room was a slaughterhouse. Domenico’s men lay dead across the floor.
Only three people were still breathing. Camilla and Dr. Crane, hyperventilating in their chairs, and Domenico Romano, who was backing away in sheer terror, his silver revolver shaking violently in his hand.
Lorenzo stepped out of the shadows, covered in the blood of his enemies. He looked like the devil himself.
"Lorenzo," Domenico stammered, raising his gun. "Let’s make a deal. We can split the territory—"
Lorenzo didn't even slow his pace. He walked directly toward the barrel of the gun.
Domenico pulled the trigger. Click. In his panic, he hadn't realized he had emptied his cylinder firing blindly into the dark.
Lorenzo reached out, grabbed Domenico by the throat, and lifted the older man entirely off his feet.
"You came into my home," Lorenzo whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, terrifying calm. "You touched my family."
With a sudden, violent twist, a sickening snap echoed through the microphone.
Domenico Romano’s body went limp. Lorenzo dropped him to the concrete floor like garbage.
He slowly turned his gaze toward Camilla and Dr. Crane.
Camilla was weeping so hysterically she couldn't even form words. She just shook her head, pleading with her eyes.
Lorenzo stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. Then, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

"Call the police," Lorenzo ordered his remaining men upstairs through the radio. "Tell them there was a gang hit at the Bolaro estate. Tell them the Romanos breached the house. And tell them to bring an ambulance. They are going to find two conspirators tied up in the basement, fully ready to confess to the murder of Isabella Bolaro and the attempted murder of my son."
He turned his back on them and walked out of the room, leaving them to rot in prison for the rest of their miserable lives.
