Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Bennett

The boardroom at Bennett Enterprises was a cathedral of glass, steel, and corporate intimidation. Fifty floors above Manhattan, the executive committee sat around the massive mahogany table in absolute silence.

At the head of the table sat Marcus Vance—not as a defense lawyer, but as an independent proxy shareholder holding emergency voting rights.

The chamber doors swung open with a sharp, echoing snap.

Alexander Bennett walked in. He wasn't wearing the frantic, sleep-deprived expression the board members had anticipated. He walked with the absolute, unyielding posture of a king reclaiming his throne. Behind him walked two federal marshals, followed quietly by Catherine Bennett and little Chloe, holding tightly to her mother’s hand.

Gasps erupted around the table. Board members dropped their pens; several older executives turned the color of chalk, staring in sheer horror at the woman they had legally erased from existence seven years prior.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Alexander said smoothly, his voice cutting through the stunned silence like a razor. He pulled out the chair at the head of the table and sat down, lacing his fingers together. "I understand there was a motion on the agenda today to question my leadership."

Jonathan Sterling, the senior board member and chief architect of his father’s cover-ups, stood up, his hands shaking as he gripped the edge of the table. "This... this is an absurdity! That woman is an impostor! Legal records state she passed away in—"

"Legal records that you, Sterling, forged using a deceased administrator's credentials and corporate bribery funds," Marcus interrupted sharply, dropping a thick federal indictment packet onto the center of the mahogany table.

Marcus slid copies to each board member. "Federal wire fraud, kidnapping, conspiracy, and embezzlement of corporate assets to finance the illegal institutionalization of Catherine Bennett. Every single signature has been authenticated by the Department of Justice. Federal warrants are currently being executed at the homes of three other members sitting in this room right now."

Panic rippled through the boardroom. Men who had ruled the city with impunity for decades suddenly realized the game was entirely over.

Alexander stood up, leaning forward over the table, his dark eyes locking onto Sterling’s terrified face.

"My father built this empire on the belief that blood could be bought, families could be broken, and secrets could be buried forever," Alexander said quietly, his voice vibrating with suppressed fury. "He was wrong. Secrets have a way of walking out of the shadows, especially when children start looking for their sisters."

He turned away from the table, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows where the morning sun broke brilliantly over the Manhattan skyline.

Catherine stepped up beside him, resting her hand in his. Near the doorway, Thomas and Chloe stood together, laughing quietly at a video on a tablet, safe, united, and home at last.

The empire was secure. But more importantly, the ghosts were finally laid to rest.
