Chapter 3 - The Ghost Returns

The transition from the cold streets of Manhattan to the sprawling, sunlit halls of the Bennett estate was nothing short of a seismic shock for eight-year-old Chloe. For the first few days, she spoke very little, hoarding crusts of bread in her pockets and sleeping on the floor beside her bed rather than under the heavy down comforters.
Thomas, however, proved to be her anchor.
The siblings sat together in the grand conservatory, their dark hair catching the afternoon light through the glass ceiling, sharing drawings in the margins of old notebooks. Thomas babbled endlessly about his school projects, while Chloe listened with solemn, wide-eyed wonder, slowly realizing that the terrifying world outside had walls that could actually keep her safe.
Yet, Alexander knew the nightmare wasn't over.
Arthur Bennett’s estate—though the old patriarch had passed away two years prior—was still managed by a board of directors loyal to his draconian vision. If word got out that Catherine’s daughter had surfaced, the legal battle over the Bennett inheritance, corporate control, and the systemic cover-up of her abduction would detonate a scandal capable of destroying the empire overnight.
More importantly, Alexander still harbored one haunting, unanswered question: Where was Catherine?
The nurse’s testimony indicated that Catherine had survived that night at St. Jude's, slipping away into the shadows of the city to protect her daughter from afar. If she was still alive, why hadn't she come back for Thomas? Why had she stayed hidden in the dark?
The answer arrived on a rainy Tuesday morning in an unmarked manila envelope left at the front gates of the estate.

Inside was a single key, a handwritten address in upstate New York, and a note written in familiar, elegant cursive:
“Alex. You promised to protect them both. The circle is closing. Come alone.”
