Chapter 4 - The House by the Lake

The address led to a secluded, weather-beaten cabin nestled deep in the dense forests bordering the Hudson Valley. The fog hung low over the dark water of the lake, wrapping the property in an eerie, ghostly stillness.

Alexander parked his car at the edge of the tree line, his heart pounding against his ribs. He gripped the heavy iron key in his palm, stepping cautiously up the wooden porch steps. The front door stood slightly ajar, creaking open with a gentle push.

The interior of the cabin smelled of old paper, cedarwood, and faint, lingering lavender—the exact scent he had memorized and mourned for seven years.

"Catherine?" Alexander called out, his voice echoing in the quiet room.

A shadow moved near the stone fireplace.

A woman stepped out from the dim light. She was older, her dark hair streaked with silver, her face etched with the undeniable lines of exhaustion and enduring sorrow. But those eyes—those piercing, brilliant eyes—hadn't changed at all.

"Alex," Catherine said softly, her voice trembling.

Alexander crossed the room in two long strides, reaching out as if touching a phantom, his hands trembling as they gripped her shoulders. "You're alive. All this time... my father told me you died of an aggressive infection. He showed me medical charts, death certificates..."

"Your father was a monster of his own design," Catherine whispered, tears spilling over her lashes as she leaned into his touch. "When I refused to sign away custody of Chloe, he had me committed under a false name to a private psychiatric facility upstate. I spent four years locked away behind iron bars, watched by guards who told me every single day that you had signed the papers, that you wanted me erased so you could remarry into corporate royalty."

A cold rage surged through Alexander's veins. "I never signed anything. I would have torn the world apart to find you."

"I know that now," Catherine replied, placing her hand gently over his heart. "It took me three years after my release just to trace Chloe's whereabouts, to make sure she was alive, to watch over her from a distance because I knew if your father’s loyalists discovered I was breathing, they would finish what they started."

She stepped back, gesturing toward a table covered in stacked files, legal documents, and digital flash drives.

"I didn't bring you here to mourn the past, Alex," Catherine said, her voice hardening with resolve. "The board members who helped my father cover up the kidnapping are still sitting on the executive committee at Bennett Enterprises. They control the voting shares. And they are planning to vote you out tomorrow morning under the pretense of 'mental instability' following your sudden disappearance from the office."

Alexander looked at the files, then back at Catherine. A cold, calculating smile touched his lips—the exact expression of the ruthless titan his father had trained him to be, repurposed now for family and vengeance.

"Let them try," Alexander said softly. "They think I'm a distracted heir chasing ghosts. They have no idea I’ve just found my entire world."
