Chapter 10 - Hands That Speak

Later that evening, the center held its official grand opening gala.

The hall was filled with families, educators, and supporters. Sunlight gave way to the soft glow of interior lights as music played softly—calibrated with deep bass vibrations so that the deaf guests could feel the rhythm through the hardwood floors.

Mary walked through the crowd, greeting parents and signing with the children. Her brother Leo was there, dressed in a sharp little suit, happily chatting with a group of new friends in fluent ASL. Seeing him laugh without a care in the world brought a deep, profound peace to Mary's heart.

Ethan walked up to her, holding two glasses of sparkling cider. He handed one to her.

"A toast," Ethan said aloud, his voice steady, clear, and confident.

Mary raised her glass, smiling. "To what?"

Ethan set his glass down on a high table, lifted his hands, and signed gracefully, his face illuminated by a genuine, brilliant smile:

To the night you chose not to be silent.

Mary set her glass down next to his. She lifted her hands, her fingers moving swiftly, carrying all the warmth, triumph, and hope of their journey:

May you like

To the voices that will never be hidden again.

They clinked their glasses together, the clear ring echoing softly in the warm air—a quiet sound, but one that carried the weight of a transformed life.
