Chapter 7 - The Morning After

By dawn, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a brilliant, washed-blue Miami sky and the warm hum of tropical sunlight streaming through the windows of the Castellano estate.

Hazel sat in the nursery kitchen, spooning warm rice cereal into baby Leo’s mouth while Maya—now dressed in a bright pink dress and wearing her favorite sparkly hair clips—chattered happily beside her, drawing pictures with a box of new crayons.

“Mommy, look! I drew a big castle for baby Leo!” Maya declared proudly, holding up a piece of construction paper covered in purple and green scribbles.

“It’s beautiful, sweetie,” Hazel smiled, kissing the top of Maya’s head.

The heavy double doors of the nursery swung open.

Dominic walked in. He had changed into a fresh, crisp white dress shirt and dark trousers, though the faint shadows under his eyes still hinted at the brutal night he had just endured.

Maya stopped coloring, her eyes going wide as she looked up at the towering, intimidating man she had only seen from a distance.

Dominic stopped in his tracks. He looked at Maya, then at Hazel, and a slow, completely natural smile broke across his usually stern face.

“Good morning, artist,” Dominic said softly, walking over and crouching down so he was at eye level with the little girl. “Is that castle for Leo?”

Maya blinked, clutching her crayon tightly before nodding. “ Yes, sir. Because he’s a little prince.”

Dominic chuckled—a warm, rich sound that seemed to chase away the last lingering ghosts of the night before. He reached out, gently patting Maya’s hair. “Well, I think the prince is very lucky to have such a wonderful artist decorating his kingdom.”

Maya beamed, instantly losing all her shyness, and pushed the drawing right into his hands.

Hazel watched them, a profound wave of warmth washing over her chest. The fear that had gripped her heart when she first boarded that yacht weeks ago felt like a lifetime away.

“The news from the docks?” Hazel asked quietly once Maya had gone back to her crayons.

“Resolved,” Dominic said, standing up and walking over to where Hazel sat. He leaned against the counter, looking down at her with an intensity that made her breath hitch. “The Moretti syndicate sent a delegation to my attorneys in New York an hour ago. They’re pulling out of Florida permanently. No more threats. No more leaks.”

“It’s over?” Hazel asked, almost daring to believe it.

“It’s over,” Dominic confirmed softly.

He reached out, his warm fingers gently cupping her chin, tilting her face up so she had no choice but to look into his dark, unwavering eyes.

“You survived my world, Hazel,” Dominic murmured, his voice dropping an octave. “And you didn't just survive it—you brought light into the darkest corners of it. My son chose you first. And now... I’m choosing you, too.”

Hazel’s heart hammered against her ribs, but this time, there was no fear. Only a deep, unshakeable certainty.

“What about my old life?” she whispered. “What about the apartments, the jobs, the uncertainty?”

“That life is gone,” Dominic replied, his thumb brushing gently across her cheekbone. “You and Maya belong here now. With me. If you’ll have us.”

Hazel looked from Dominic down to little Leo, who was happily babbling in his high chair, and then across the room to Maya, who was proudly hanging her drawing on the nursery wall.

She placed her hand over Dominic’s large, calloused hand on her cheek.

“I think,” Hazel whispered with a radiant smile, “we’re already home.”
