Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

By sunrise, Hazel Morrison realized she had stepped straight into a gilded prison.

She hadn't been fired; she had been requisitioned. When her catering manager was informed that Dominic Castellano wanted his temporary server to remain on the yacht as a live-in nanny, the man had practically tripped over himself to agree, handing over her back pay with a nervous bow.

Now, instead of a cramped two-room apartment in downtown Miami, Hazel stood inside the sprawling, master-suite nursery of the Castellano mega-yacht—a room lined with silk wallpaper, custom mahogany furniture, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the turquoise expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

In her arms, the baby—whose name she had learned was Leo—was sleeping peacefully, his tiny chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm.

The door clicked open, and Dominic Castellano walked in.

He had changed out of his formal evening suit into a crisp black t-shirt and dark jeans that only emphasized the broad, dangerous line of his shoulders. He looked as though he hadn't slept at all, yet his dark eyes were sharp and hyper-focused.

He stopped a few feet away, watching her with a scrutinizing gaze.

“He slept for six hours straight,” Dominic noted, sounding almost suspicious, as if waiting for a catch. “That hasn't happened since we boarded this vessel in Monaco.”

“Babies don't need a security detail, Mr. Castellano,” Hazel said quietly, adjusting her grip on Leo so she wouldn't wake him. “They need consistency, warmth, and someone who actually responds when they cry instead of standing around waiting for orders.”

A flicker of something resembling amusement—or perhaps irritation—crossed Dominic’s face. He walked over to the changing table, picking up a secure satellite phone.

“My background check on you came back ten minutes ago,” Dominic said casually, scrolling through a digital file. “Hazel Morrison. Twenty-six years old. Single mother. Working three different low-wage jobs across Miami. Eviction notice served on your apartment last month. And a mountain of medical debt tied to your daughter... Maya.”

Hazel’s breath hitched. A spike of pure, protective terror pierced her chest. “Stay away from my daughter. If you touch her—”

“Relax, Miss Morrison,” Dominic interrupted smoothly, locking the phone screen and sliding it into his pocket. “I don't terrorize children. But I do vet everyone who comes within ten feet of my son.”

He stepped closer, his imposing presence filling the nursery.

“Here are the terms,” Dominic continued, his voice dropping into a cool, authoritative register. “You stay on this yacht—and eventually at my Miami estate—as Leo’s primary caretaker. Your salary will be twenty times what that catering company was paying you. Every single medical debt your daughter has accumulated will be wiped clean by sunset, paid in full by my legal foundation. And your apartment will be upgraded to a secure, luxury townhouse in Coral Gables.”

Hazel stared at him, stunned into silence. It sounded like a fairy tale designed by a mafia kingpin.

“And what’s the catch?” she asked, her voice steady despite her racing heart. “Nothing in your world is free.”

“The catch is absolute loyalty and absolute discretion,” Dominic replied, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unyielding gravity. “You live under my roof, you follow my security protocols, and you answer only to me. If anyone asks, you are my executive household manager. No one outside this inner circle knows the full extent of my family arrangements.”

Hazel looked down at little Leo, who stirred slightly, nuzzling deeper against her shoulder. She thought of the stacked bills on her kitchen counter. She thought of Maya’s upcoming specialist appointments that she didn't have the funds to cover.

It wasn't a choice. It was a lifeline thrown by a shark.

“When can I see my daughter?” Hazel asked.

“A security detail is picking her and her grandmother up right now,” Dominic replied evenly. “By noon, they’ll be settled into the townhouse. You can see her whenever your duties permit.”

Hazel swallowed hard. “Fine. I accept.”

Dominic gave a curt nod of satisfaction. “Good. Because Leo has already made his choice. And in my world, when the heir chooses, everyone else falls in line.”
