Chapter 2 - The Past Unlocked

The silence in the grand hallway stretched so long it felt like glass ready to shatter.

Sheikh Tariq took a sharp step forward, ignoring the anxious buzzing of the hotel staff. His dark eyes scanned Lucía’s face—not with the arrogant dismissal of a wealthy traveler looking at a servant, but with a fierce, searching intensity that cut straight through the gray uniform and the ponytail.

"Where did you learn that accent?" Tariq asked, his voice ringing clearly in English now, though heavily laced with disbelief. "That specific dialect... it belongs to the old quarter of Aleppo."

Lucía lowered her gaze, feeling the terrifying weight of exposure. For fifteen years, she had buried her past under layers of silence, border crossings, and assumed safety in Mexico City. "It was... a long time ago, Your Excellency," she murmured, switching back to Spanish as if trying to rebuild the wall she had just torn down.

Mr. Valdés rushed in, sweating profusely, waving his hands. "Sir, please forgive her! She’s just a cleaner, she doesn't mean to—"

"Silence," Tariq commanded without turning around. His gaze remained fixed on Lucía. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small, heavy silver signet ring engraved with intricate geometric patterns, and held it out in the palm of his hand. "Do you recognize this?"

Lucía’s breath hitched. Her hands began to tremble. On the surface of the silver was a dual-headed falcon—the crest of the Al-Darwish family, a name she had sworn never to speak aloud again.

"I... I am just a cleaner, sir," Lucía whispered, backing away a step, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Before the sheikh could press further, the elevator chimes rang, and a second group of delegates emerged, led by local politicians and the hotel's general director. Distracted by the sudden rush of protocol, Tariq was forced to turn away, though not before casting one last, lingering look at Lucía.

"Do not move from this floor," Tariq instructed his head of security in Arabic, his eyes locked on Lucía one final time before he was swept into the Emerald Room.

Left standing alone in the hallway, Lucía’s legs felt like water. She grabbed her cart and pushed it blindly toward the service elevator, knowing instinctively that her quiet, invisible life in Mexico City had just come to a violent end.
