Chapter 3 - The Scramble for Leverage

The realization hit Joanna like a physical blow. She lunged forward, her nails clicking against the counter, but Sergeant Callahan stepped between them, his hand resting casually on his belt.
“Ma’am, step back,” the sergeant warned.
“You don't understand!” Joanna shrieked, turning her fury back toward Amelia. “You can’t do that! We have an arrangement! The townhome is tied to my credit, but you are the guarantor! If the mortgage defaults, my social standing—everything I’ve built—is ruined!”
“Then I suggest you start packing your bags,” Amelia said coldly. She turned to Maisie, scooping the little girl up into her arms and pressing a reassuring kiss to her forehead. “We’re going home, sweetie. You’re safe. Nobody is taking you anywhere.”
As Amelia walked toward the precinct glass doors, she heard Joanna behind her, frantically dialing her phone, shouting names into the receiver as she tried to marshal whatever pathetic allies she had left in the township.
By the time Amelia and Maisie reached their car, the sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the suburban sky in bruised shades of purple and orange. Maisie finally let out a long, shuddering sigh, resting her head on Amelia’s shoulder.
“Are we really safe, Mommy?” Maisie whispered.
“More safe than we’ve ever been,” Amelia promised.

Back at the precinct, Joanna’s panic was escalating into full-blown hysteria. She had called her attorney, only to be told that as a voluntary guarantor, Amelia had every legal right to revoke financial sponsorship at any time, especially given that no binding contract existed. She called her credit card companies, only to find that the secondary cards linked to Amelia’s corporate account had already been frozen and reported lost.
The house of cards wasn't just leaning; it was collapsing into dust. And the worst part for Joanna wasn't the loss of luxury—it was the sudden, terrifying realization that without Amelia’s money, the dark history she had spent years burying beneath designer clothes and charity galas was about to crawl out into the light.
