I watched them leave the store, the girl chatting excitedly about her book, Elise listening with a patience I had never truly appreciated.

I stood in the aisle for a long time, the weight of a decade finally lifting from my shoulders. I had spent years wanting them back, wanting to be forgiven. I walked out into the cool Denver air, the sun setting over the mountains. I was alone, but for the first time, I wasn't lonely. I was a man who had finally learned the truth: the greatest gifts in life aren't the ones you buy, but the ones you keep by being a person worthy of them.

I had been the architect of my own ruin, but I was also the master of my own redemption. And as I started my car, I knew I would be okay. I was no longer the man who walked into an empty house; I was a man who had finally walked into the light of his own conscience.
