Chapter 8 - The Syndicate’s Debt

The Cayenne slammed to a violent halt at the bottom of the dry ravine, its front bumper crumpled against a cluster of desert boulders, engine hissing and wheezing as thick white steam billowed out from under the crushed hood.

Inside the smoke-filled cabin, Nora coughed harshly, shaking her head to clear the sudden ringing in her ears. The driver's side airbag hung deflated and limp against her chest. Her left arm throbbed from the impact, but she was alive.

Above her on the highway shoulder, the sound of screeching tires echoed through the quiet night air.

The pickup truck had pulled over.

Heavy footsteps crunched loudly against the loose gravel at the edge of the embankment.

Nora fumbled blindly across the center console for her emergency tactical blade tucked inside the hidden glove compartment, her fingers closing around the cold steel handle just as the passenger-side window of her SUV shattered with a loud, cracking explosion.

A heavy, calloused hand reached through the broken glass, grabbing the door handle from the inside and yanking it open with brutal force.

Kincaid stood towering in the opening, his face twisted into an ugly, triumphant sneer under the moonlight. A suppressed pistol gleamed dully in his right hand.

“End of the line, Mrs. Finch,” Kincaid snarled, his voice dripping with venom. “You and your little art authenticator friend should have stayed out of ledgers that didn't belong to you.”

Nora didn't flinch. She raised her left hand, keeping the tactical blade concealed low against her leg, her eyes locking onto Kincaid’s with icy defiance. “You really think killing me in the middle of the desert will save you, Kincaid? Callum Russo already signed your death warrant once. If I die tonight, he won’t just banish you—he’ll feed you to the river.”

Kincaid’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second at the mention of Callum’s name, before hardening into desperate resolve. “Russo isn't here, lady. And by the time his people figure out where—”

BANG.

A sharp, deafening crack echoed across the desert canyon.

It wasn't Kincaid’s gun.

Kincaid’s eyes widened in absolute shock. The pistol slipped from his fingers, clattering uselessly against the gravel floor of the wash. A dark, ragged hole blossomed suddenly in the center of his canvas jacket.

He didn't make another sound. He simply collapsed backward onto the dusty earth like a felled timber.

Nora blinked through the smoke, gripping her knife as she looked up toward the top of the embankment.

Standing silhouette against the starlit sky, holding a smoking, high-caliber tactical rifle with casual precision, was a towering figure in a tailored black overcoat.

Behind him, two sleek black SUVs with their high beams blazing pulled up silently along the highway shoulder, doors popping open as heavily armed men poured out to secure the perimeter.

The figure stepped down the embankment, his polished leather shoes crunching softly against the gravel until he reached the side of Nora’s wrecked Cayenne.

Callum Russo lowered the rifle slightly, peering into the shattered window of the vehicle. His dark grey eyes swept over Nora, checking her for injuries with the clinical eye of a seasoned commander before a faint, grim smirk touched the corners of his mouth.

“You know, Ms. Miller’s new boss,” Callum remarked smoothly, his deep voice carrying easily over the hiss of the steaming engine, “has a rather unfortunate habit of finding herself in the middle of roadside ambushes.”

Nora exhaled a long, shaky breath, releasing her grip on the knife. She looked up at the syndicate boss who had just rewritten the rules of her survival.

“And you,” Nora replied, offering a tired, razor-sharp smile of her own as she unbuckled her seatbelt, “happen to have remarkably good timing.”

May you like

Callum reached out a strong, calloused hand, grabbing her uninjured arm and effortlessly hoisting her out of the wrecked SUV into the cool desert air.

“Not good timing, Mrs. Finch,” Callum said softly, turning his head as Miller and his tactical squad secured Kincaid’s lifeless body in the background. “Just professional courtesy. After all... nobody messes with my people’s supply chain.”
