Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Mojave

The sun was sinking fast behind the jagged peaks of the Mojave Desert, painting the vast expanse of highway in shades of bruised purple, deep orange, and burnt umber.
Nora’s black Porsche Cayenne hummed quietly as it devoured the asphalt miles on Route 95, heading south toward the regional distribution hub in Yuma.
Inside the cabin, the stereo played low, ambient classical music, but Nora’s attention was entirely focused on the winding ribbon of road ahead. Her phone sat securely in its magnetic dash mount, displaying a live GPS tracking overlay and a secure encrypted messaging channel linked to Marcus back at headquarters.
She had spent the last forty-eight hours dismantling an empire of deceit, and yet, as the miles stretched out behind her, a strange, lingering restlessness gnawed at the back of her mind.
Edgar and Kristina were safely behind bars, denied bail due to flight risk and the severity of the charges. Declan Vance and Kincaid were halfway across the Atlantic on a container ship bound for exile. The corporate audit was uncovering every hidden financial leak with ruthless efficiency.
And yet, one loose thread remained untied.
Heather Perkinson.
According to the initial financial traces Marcus had pulled from the Delaware shell company, Heather hadn't simply been a casual mistress or an accidental beneficiary of Edgar’s illicit wire transfers. She had been renting a luxury high-rise condo in downtown Phoenix paid for entirely by Preston Materials corporate funds—a condo located less than three blocks from the upscale art gallery where Sadie Miller’s authentication firm operated.
Coincidence? Nora thought, her hands tightening slightly on the steering wheel. In her line of work, she had learned long ago that true coincidences were exceptionally rare.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed sharply against the dash mount.
A high-priority text notification flashed across the screen from an unknown, encrypted local number.
You think you won by locking up Edgar, Nora. But the house always takes its cut before the game ends. Look in your rearview mirror.
Nora’s eyes flicked instantly to the rear-view mirror.
For miles, the highway had been completely deserted. But now, cutting through the gathering dusk about half a mile behind her, a pair of high-beam headlights blazed out of the twilight, accelerating at a breakneck speed.
The vehicle was driving without tail lights, hugging the center line of the two-lane desert bypass as it closed the distance with terrifying velocity.
Nora’s pulse spiked, but her mind remained razor-sharp. She didn't panic; she calculated.
She was twenty miles outside of Quartzsite, deep in a stretch of highway with no cell reception except for the satellite uplink wired directly into her vehicle’s diagnostic console.
The vehicle behind her slammed on its high beams, blinding her reflection in the rearview mirror.
May you like
A trap.
Without hesitation, Nora stamped her foot down on the accelerator. The twin-turbo engine roared to life, pinning her back against the leather seat as the SUV surged past ninety miles per hour, eating up the dark desert highway as the shadows closed in around her.
