Chapter 3: What Grandpa Is For

Eight months later, autumn painted the trees gold outside Frank's lakeside cabin.

Life looked different.

Quieter.

Safer.

Healing wasn't quick.

Some nights Lena still woke from nightmares.

Some days Noah jumped when doors slammed.

But little by little, the fear lost its power.

One Saturday morning, Lena found Noah sitting on the dock beside his grandfather.

The two of them were fishing.

Or at least pretending to.

Most of the time they simply talked.

Frank handed Noah a sandwich.

The boy smiled.

Then he asked a question.

"Grandpa?"

"Yeah, buddy?"

"What if Mom gets sad again?"

Frank looked out across the water.

"Then we help her."

"What if she gets scared?"

"We help her."

"What if she thinks she's alone?"

Frank smiled.

"Then we remind her she's not."

Noah thought about that.

Then he nodded.

"That's what grandpas are for."

Frank laughed softly.

"That's right."

At that exact moment, Lena stepped onto the dock.

The sunlight reflected off the lake behind her.

She looked healthier.

Stronger.

Not because the past had disappeared.

But because she had survived it.

Noah jumped up and ran toward her.

She caught him in her arms.

For a second, she remembered the terrified little boy standing on the kitchen floor with her phone in his hands.

The call that saved her life.

The call she had been too broken to make herself.

Frank watched them from the end of the dock.

His eyes glistened.

Lena hugged Noah tighter.

"Thank you," she whispered.

The boy frowned.

"For what?"

"For being brave."

Noah shrugged.

"I just called Grandpa."

Lena laughed through her tears.

Sometimes heroes don't wear uniforms.

Sometimes they wear dinosaur pajamas.

And sometimes, when a mother cannot breathe, a five-year-old boy remembers exactly what Grandpa is for.

The End.
