Chapter 1: The Voice on the Speaker

Evan froze.

The sound of Frank Miller's voice coming through the phone was the last thing he expected.

"Me," Frank repeated. "And the police are already on their way."

For the first time all night, uncertainty crossed Evan's face.

Noah clutched the phone tighter and moved closer to his mother.

Lena could barely breathe. Every inhale felt like broken glass scraping inside her chest.

Evan took a step forward.

"Give me the phone."

"No," Noah whispered.

His tiny voice shook, but he didn't move.

Evan's jaw tightened.

"Boy, I said give it to me."

Before Noah could answer, another sound filled the house.

Sirens.

Distant at first.

Then closer.

Much closer.

Frank spoke again.

"You should leave, Evan."

The color drained from Evan's face.

He glanced toward the window.

Red and blue lights flashed across the living room wall.

For years he had controlled every situation through fear.

But fear works only when nobody sees what happens behind closed doors.

Tonight, someone had seen.

A five-year-old boy.

The front door burst open moments later.

Two police officers entered.

Behind them stood Frank Miller.

Six-foot-three.

Gray-haired.

Fifty years of hard work etched into his face.

His eyes immediately found Lena lying on the kitchen floor.

Something inside him broke.

"Daddy..." Lena whispered.

Frank knelt beside her carefully.

The bruises told him everything.

He looked up at Evan.

And for a moment, the entire room went silent.

"You touched my daughter."

It wasn't a question.

Evan tried to explain.

"It wasn't what it looked like—"

Frank stood.

"No."

His voice was calm.

Far too calm.

"It's exactly what it looks like."

The officers stepped between them.

One officer placed handcuffs on Evan while another called for emergency medical assistance.

As Evan was led away, he looked at Noah.

May you like

The boy stared back without saying a word.

For the first time in years, Evan realized he no longer controlled the story.
