Chapter 2 - THE INVISIBLE OBSERVER

My life changed in the span of an hour. I was no longer the invisible girl who scrubbed bloodstains off the marble; I was now under Gabriel Falcone’s direct protection—and his constant scrutiny.

Gabriel’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. Within forty-eight hours, the fever broke completely. But he wasn't the same man. The betrayal had sharpened him. He moved through his estate like a caged panther, every door locked, every staff member vetted twice.

He moved me into a suite near his own. It was luxurious, a far cry from the cramped apartment I shared with my ailing grandmother, whose care I was still trying to pay for.

“Why me?” I asked him one evening as he stood on the balcony, watching the New York skyline. He was still wearing a sling, but his posture was upright, predatory.

“Because you saw the invisible,” Gabriel said, turning to face me. “In my world, everyone looks for the gun or the knife. Nobody looks at the seams. You looked at the seams. And in doing so, you exposed a traitor.”

I hesitated, then decided to take the risk. “I’ve seen things, Gabriel. For six months, I’ve cleaned offices where you thought no one was listening. I saw Carmine’s lieutenant, Vinnie, taking calls in the garden at midnight. I saw the housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, disposing of mail that wasn't addressed to anyone in this house.”

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. “Vinnie? He’s been with me for ten years.”

“He’s been with you, but he’s been talking to someone else,” I countered. “And the mail—it wasn't bills. It was coded logistics.”

Gabriel didn't yell. He didn't erupt in rage. Instead, he walked over to a secure wall safe, spun the dial, and pulled out a dossier. He tossed it onto the coffee table between us.

“I’ve suspected a leak for months. The drive-by that hit my shoulder wasn't random. It was an inside job, timed perfectly.”

I opened the dossier. It was filled with photos of the estate, schematics of the security grid, and pages of financial records that didn't match the Falcone accounts. My eyes landed on a recurring name in the margins: The Syndicate.

“They aren't just trying to kill you,” I realized, a chill running down my spine. “They’re trying to replace you.”
