Chapter 3 - The Siege of the Rossi Estate

The attack came two nights later, under the cover of a moonless, suffocatingly dark sky.
I was in my suite, laying Leo down in his crib after a midnight feeding, when the first explosion rattled the foundation of the mansion. The blast was so powerful it shattered the decorative vases in the hallway and sent a shockwave of dust falling from the ceiling.
Sirens immediately blared to life. The heavy steel blast doors covering the windows slid shut with an automated, hydraulic hiss, plunging the room into absolute darkness before the red emergency lights flickered on.
"Hunter!"
The door to my suite flew open. Lorenzo stood in the doorway, wearing tactical gear over a black sweater, an assault rifle slung across his chest. His eyes were wild, scanning the room until they locked onto me.
"They breached the front gates," Lorenzo barked over the sound of automated gunfire erupting outside. "A full assault team. More than we anticipated. Get Leo. Now."
I didn't hesitate. I scooped the sleeping baby out of his crib, wrapping him tightly in a thick cashmere blanket. Leo whimpered in his sleep, disturbed by the noise, but he didn't cry.
Lorenzo grabbed my arm, his grip firm but protective, and pulled me into the hallway.
The mansion, usually a quiet, echoing museum of wealth, was a war zone. Rossi soldiers in Kevlar vests were sprinting down the corridors, taking up defensive positions behind marble pillars and overturned mahogany tables. The deafening roar of automatic weapons echoed from the grand foyer.
"The panic room is in the basement," Lorenzo yelled, keeping his body positioned between me and the main staircase. "Stay behind me. Keep your head down."
We moved quickly through the shadows of the secondary servants' stairs. I knew these halls. Only a month ago, I had been scrubbing these very floors, trying to remain invisible. Now, the boss of the syndicate was using his own body as a human shield to ensure my survival.
As we reached the landing of the basement level, a massive explosion blew out the reinforced doors of the kitchen above us. The blast knocked me off my feet. I twisted mid-air, taking the brunt of the fall on my shoulder to protect Leo.
Pain flared up my arm, but I scrambled backward as three men in tactical gear poured down the stairs, their weapons raised.
Lorenzo didn't flinch. He pushed me behind a concrete support pillar and stepped directly into the line of fire. His rifle barked—precise, controlled bursts of lethal force. Two of the attackers dropped instantly. The third dove behind a stack of wooden wine crates, firing blindly into the corridor.
Bullets chipped the concrete inches from my head. I curled around Leo, shielding his tiny body with mine, praying to whatever God was listening.
"Covering fire!" Lorenzo shouted into a radio strapped to his chest. Seconds later, Rossi reinforcements flanked the basement from the armory, pinning the remaining attacker down.
Lorenzo didn't wait. He grabbed my uninjured arm, hauling me to my feet. "Move, Hunter! To the vault!"
We sprinted down the remaining corridor, reaching a massive, circular steel door built directly into the bedrock of the foundation. Lorenzo rapidly punched a code into the keypad. The heavy bolts disengaged with a loud clank, and he shoved me inside.
"Stay here," Lorenzo ordered, his chest heaving as he looked at me and the baby. "Do not open this door for anyone except me. If you hear three knocks, a pause, and two knocks, it's me. Anyone else... you let the steel hold them."
"Lorenzo, please," I begged, grabbing his tactical vest. The thought of the heavy door closing between us, of him going back out into the crossfire, sent a wave of cold terror through my veins. "Don't go back out there. Stay with us."
He paused. In the dim light of the vault, his hardened, violent exterior cracked, revealing the soul of a man who had lost too much to lose anything else. He reached out, cupping the side of my face, his thumb brushing over my trembling lips.
"I have to end this, Hunter," he whispered fiercely. "I have to end the Falcones tonight, or they will hunt us for the rest of our lives. I lost Sophia. I will not lose you. I will not lose my son."
Before I could reply, he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine. It wasn't a gentle, polite kiss. It was hard, desperate, and filled with a burning, possessive promise. It tasted of adrenaline and inevitably.
When he pulled away, he looked at me one last time, then stepped backward out of the vault.

"Three knocks. Pause. Two," he repeated.
Then he hit the override switch. The heavy steel door slid shut, locking me in absolute, terrifying silence.
