The two-month-old son of Long Island’s most feared mafia boss was starving to death because his body rejected every bottle, every formula, and every donor milk the doctors tried

. I was only a maid, and entering Leo Rossi’s guarded nursery without permission could have gotten me killed—but when Lorenzo Rossi opened the door and saw his dying son finally feeding in my arms, the secret I had hidden beneath my uniform for three weeks was suddenly impossible to hide.

My name is Hunter. I was twenty-four when I became a maid in the Rossi mansion.

Everyone knew Lorenzo Rossi.

People whispered that his empire was worth two billion dollars, built on loyalty, fear, and men who knew better than to betray him.

But none of that power could save his son.

Two months earlier, a car bomb meant for Lorenzo had killed his pregnant wife, Sophia. Doctors delivered Leo before she died, but the baby had been fighting for his life ever since.

By the time I arrived, specialists practically lived in the mansion.

Nothing worked.

Formula. Donor milk. Feeding tubes.

Leo rejected everything.

Then one evening, I overheard a doctor speaking quietly to Lorenzo.

“Maybe forty-eight hours.”

Lorenzo's face hardened.

“Then you have forty-eight hours to save him.”

That night, I heard Leo crying.

It wasn't the angry cry of a hungry baby. It was weak. Fading.

I stood outside the forbidden nursery with my hand on the door.

For three weeks, I'd been hiding something beneath my uniform.

I'd recently given birth too.

My baby hadn't survived.

I told nobody. Returning to work was easier than sitting at home surrounded by a crib that would never be used.

But my milk hadn't stopped.

Every morning, I bound my chest tightly and endured the pain.

Then Leo whimpered again.

I opened the door.

The night nurse was asleep near the window. Leo lay pale and exhausted, his tiny mouth searching helplessly.

I picked him up.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

He felt frighteningly light.

“This could get me killed,” I whispered.

Still, I loosened my uniform and brought him against me.

Nothing happened.

My heart sank.

Then Leo latched.

I stopped breathing.

He swallowed once.

Again.

Again.

The monitor began settling into a steadier rhythm.

“You're eating,” I whispered through tears. “You're actually eating.”

His tiny fingers curled against me.

Then footsteps thundered outside.

The door opened.

Lorenzo stood there with two armed guards.

His stare dropped from my open uniform to his son.

I expected fury.

Instead, the most feared man I'd ever met went completely still.

Leo was feeding.

Then Lorenzo noticed my wrist.

I had forgotten to remove the hospital bracelet.

His expression changed instantly.

“Hunter.”

I held Leo tighter.

Lorenzo stepped toward me, staring at the bracelet as if he recognized something he wasn't supposed to recognize.

“Whose baby did you lose?”

My blood went cold.

Nobody in that mansion knew I'd been pregnant.

Yet Lorenzo wasn't looking at me with surprise.

He was looking at me like he'd just uncovered a secret.

And suddenly, one terrifying thought hit me.

Maybe my baby hadn't died because of some cruel twist of fate.
