CHAPTER 6 The Promise They Finally Kept

The first robin landed on the porch railing just after sunrise.

Luna noticed it first.

"Mom!" she called. "Look!"

Elena stepped onto the porch carrying three mugs of hot chocolate while Nova ran barefoot across the grass, chasing butterflies that never seemed interested in being caught.

Logan leaned against the porch column, watching them.

For years, silence inside Greystone Manor had meant fear.

Now it meant peace.

The girls' laughter echoed through the gardens that had once been carefully trimmed only for appearances.

Now there were wildflowers growing between the stone paths.

Elena smiled.

"I think the flowers are winning."

"They deserve to," Logan replied.

"They've waited long enough."

A week later, movers arrived.

Not to bring expensive furniture.

To take it away.

The enormous portraits of the Greystone dynasty disappeared one by one.

The polished conference table where Vincent had controlled generations was donated.

The locked office became a library.

The ballroom became a children's art studio.

Even the servants noticed the difference.

The house no longer belonged to a legacy.

It belonged to a family.

One afternoon, Luna wandered into the old east wing.

She stopped in front of a faded portrait of Logan as a little boy standing beside Vincent.

The child in the painting looked frightened.

Luna studied it carefully.

"Daddy?"

Logan walked over.

"Yes?"

"Were you sad back then?"

He looked at the portrait for a long moment.

"I was."

Luna slipped her small hand into his.

"You're not anymore."

He swallowed hard.

"No."

"I'm not."

She smiled.

"Good."

Then she pulled him toward the garden where Nova was already shouting for both of them to come play.

Logan followed without looking back at the portrait.

For the first time...

he didn't have to.

Months passed.

The criminal investigations finally ended.

Vincent received multiple life sentences for conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, attempted murder, and obstruction of justice.

Several former executives accepted plea agreements.

The remaining Greystone companies were dissolved.

Their assets funded hospitals, schools, and foundations for missing children.

When reporters asked Logan why he had donated nearly everything, his answer appeared on front pages across the country.

"My family spent decades building wealth through lies."

He paused.

"My daughters will inherit something better."

"What is that?"

"The truth."

On Christmas Eve, snow covered Greystone Manor once again.

But this year there were paper snowflakes taped to every window.

Nova had made them all herself.

Most were uneven.

One looked suspiciously like a dinosaur.

Elena insisted they stay exactly where they were.

"They're perfect."

Logan laughed.

"They're definitely something."

Inside, the fireplace burned brightly.

The girls opened presents while Elena watched from the sofa.

After dinner, Luna climbed onto Logan's lap.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Will bad people ever come back?"

He looked toward Elena.

She nodded gently.

Logan wrapped both daughters in his arms.

"Maybe," he admitted.

"The world always has bad people."

Nova frowned.

"Then how do we win?"

Elena answered before Logan could.

"We stay together."

The girls nodded as if that explained everything.

Perhaps it did.

Outside, snow continued falling across the old estate.

Inside, Greystone Manor no longer carried the weight of secrets.

Only the warmth of a family that had survived them.

Years earlier, the house had been built to protect power.

Now it protected love.

May you like

And for the first time in generations...

that was enough.
