Chapter 2 - The Empire Built on Sand

The ride back to Julian’s townhouse on the Upper East Side was wrapped in a comforting, protective quiet. The city lights of Manhattan blurred outside the tinted windows of the Maybach, but inside, the only sound was the soft hum of the climate control.
"You handled that like a queen," Julian said softly, breaking the silence as he poured a glass of sparkling water and handed it to me.
I took the glass, sipping it slowly to calm the residual adrenaline humming in my veins. "I didn't plan for it to happen like that, Julian. I really just came to drop the final property relinquishment forms with the event coordinator so I wouldn't have to deal with his lawyers tomorrow."
"Fate has a funny way of balancing scales," Julian smiled gently, sitting across from me. "Besides, Liam has been begging for a reckoning for a very long time. He just didn't expect it to arrive wrapped in white silk with his name on the delivery receipt."
Our relationship had started not out of a society romance, but out of professional survival. Six months ago, when Liam had coldly handed me divorce papers and locked me out of the corporate accounts I had helped build, Julian Sterling had stepped in as an anonymous investor offering legal backing. He had watched Hayes Vision try to quietly crush me out of the company equity I was legally owed.
What started as corporate mentorship had slowly, organically, blossomed into something deep, genuine, and profoundly safe. Julian didn't want a trophy wife to parade in front of magazines; he wanted a partner who understood the grind, the late nights, and the reality behind the success.
"Do you think he'll try to sue for custody?" I asked, a sudden cold spike of fear hitting my chest. The twins were mine, but the law could be unpredictable when billionaires panicked.
Julian’s expression hardened instantly, turning into the cold, calculating look that made Wall Street executives tremble.
"Let him try," Julian said flatly. "Liam signed a legally binding, ironclad post-nuptial property and family waiver during his startup days when he desperately needed my seed funding—a waiver he never bothered to update when he thought he was untouchable. Furthermore, our legal team has been tracking his company funds. Hayes Vision is currently leveraged to the absolute limit to finance his lavish lifestyle and his new girlfriend's PR campaigns."
He reached across the table and covered my hand with his warm, steady palm.
"Liam is broke, Liv. On paper, he looks like a tech mogul. Underneath, he's drowning in debt. And tomorrow morning, when the market opens, my firm is calling in the primary convertible notes on Hayes Vision."
I stared at him, stunned. "You're crashing his company?"
May you like
"I'm protecting what's mine," Julian corrected quietly, his eyes locked onto mine. "And that includes you and our children."
My breath caught. Our children. Julian had embraced my pregnancy from the moment he found out, long before the legal paperwork was finalized, loving the babies as if they were his own flesh and blood. Hearing him say it so naturally sent a warm wave through my chest that washed away every bitter memory of Liam's betrayal.
