Chapter 1 - The Ash and the Inheritance

The charred paper felt fragile in Adriano’s hand, the blackened edges flaking off onto his palms like soot from an old furnace.

“...the secondary trust, established prior to my diagnosis, details the immediate transfer of the primary residential estate and forty percent of Blake International shares to my boys, Noah and Liam, in the event of my passing, under the absolute condition that Adriano remains their sole guardian. Should any stepmother or third party attempt to legally assume guardianship or place them in an institutional boarding program without your direct, written consent, the entire estate assets shall immediately freeze, and an independent audit of the stepmother’s financial history will be triggered automatically...”

Adriano’s chest tightened. Clara had known. Even as she fought the cancer that eventually took her three years ago, she had possessed the sharp, protective instincts of a mother who could see past the horizon. She had anticipated that someone might try to push her boys out of their own home.

"Where is the rest of this letter, Vanessa?" Adriano asked, his voice deceptively quiet.

Vanessa stood by the door of the master bedroom, her fingers tightening around the wooden ruler. The panic that had briefly flickered in her eyes was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating mask. "It was an old, outdated draft, Adriano. Your wife was sick in the head toward the end. She was paranoid. She thought everyone was out to steal from her."

"My mother was not sick!" Noah shouted, his small voice cracking as he clung to Helena's arm. "She was nice! You’re the one who is mean!"

"Quiet, Noah," Vanessa snapped, her eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious anger. "Children do not speak when adults are talking."

"Do not speak to my son like that in this house," Adriano said, rising slowly to his feet. He was a tall man, built from years of working on high-rise construction sites before he ever sat behind a mahogany desk. He towered over her, his presence suffocating the room. "Actually, let me correct myself. This isn't our house anymore, Vanessa. According to this document, it belongs to Noah and Liam. And you have just triggered the very audit my wife put in place."

Vanessa’s expression faltered. "Adriano, be reasonable. I was only trying to help. Helena has been slacking, the boys have been undisciplined—"

"Helena has been with this family for twelve years," Adriano cut her off. "She was here when Clara was alive. She was here when my boys were born. You have been here for six months."

He turned to his senior security guard, Marco, who was waiting at the end of the corridor, having entered quietly through the side door.

"Marco," Adriano commanded. "Escort my wife to the guest cottage at the edge of the estate. She is not to enter the main house, the study, or the children’s wing. If she tries to access any computer or safe on this property, lock her in the security office."

"Adriano, you can't do this!" Vanessa protested, her voice rising in pitch as Marco stepped forward, his massive frame blocking her exit. "I am your wife! I have rights!"

"You have the right to remain silent," Adriano said, his face cold as stone. "Because if I find one single mark on my children’s skin, the police won't be the ones you'll have to worry about."
