Chapter 10 - The Warmth of the Hearth

The winter of that year arrived with a soft, gentle snowfall that covered the Hudson Valley in a blanket of pure, clean white.
The Blake mansion had been completely repaired. The broken glass was gone, the bullet holes in the plaster were filled and painted over, and the master bedroom was warm, filled with the scent of pine and cinnamon.
Noah and Liam sat on the rug by the fireplace, building a massive castle out of wooden blocks. They were laughing, their voices bright and clear, echoing through the halls of the house that was finally, truly theirs.
Adriano sat in his armchair, a cup of hot coffee in his hand, watching them with a quiet, deep-seated peace that he hadn't felt since Clara had passed away.
Helena walked in, carrying a tray of fresh cookies. She set them down on the coffee table, smiling as the boys immediately scrambled over to grab them.
"Don't eat too many before dinner, boys," she warned, though her voice was full of warmth.
"We won't, Helena!" Noah said, his mouth already full of chocolate.
Helena looked at Adriano, her eyes soft with gratitude. "They’re sleeping through the night now, Mr. Blake. No more nightmares."
"Thank you, Helena," Adriano said, reaching out to gently squeeze her hand. "For everything. You kept them safe when I wasn't here."
"They are my family, Adriano," she said softly. "I would have died before I let her take them."

Adriano looked back at his sons, who were now trying to feed their wooden castle cookies. The wind howled outside, throwing a flurry of white snow against the tall arched windows of the library, but inside, the fire was hot, the light was bright, and the walls were safe.
The shadows had finally gone from the Blake estate, and in their place, a home had returned.
