Chapter 2 - The Deception Unmasked

I didn't call the police immediately. I called my sister, Elena, who was a private investigator in the city. She arrived within forty minutes, her face turning from confusion to pure, unadulterated fury the moment she stepped into the hallway.
"Mark, look at this," Elena said, pointing to a ledger she’d pulled from beneath the floorboards in the locked room. "These aren't just investments. These are payments to a private security firm in another state. Sarah wasn't just hiding this from you—she was preparing to move. She was planning to take the kids and disappear once the final transfer cleared."
I looked at the dates. The final transfer was set for tomorrow.
"She's at the grocery store," Lily said, her voice small but steady now that she was in Elena’s arms. "She said she was getting dinner, but she always leaves the car running when she's about to 'go on a trip'."
The realization hit me: she wasn't coming back. The two-week business trip I had taken was the window of opportunity she had been waiting for. She had been starving the kids to keep them lethargic so they wouldn't try to escape while she worked her monitors.
"Elena, take them to the hospital. Get them checked out. Do not tell anyone where you are going," I commanded.
"What are you going to do?" Elena asked, her hand on her holster.
"I’m going to stay right here," I said, my voice cold, "and wait for my wife to come home."
I spent the next two hours in the dark, watching the terminal. I saw the logs, the chat histories with a man named 'Vance,' and the fake documents Sarah had created. She had even forged my signature on documents that would declare me mentally incompetent. She had set the trap, and she was waiting for me to be broken by the sight of my starving children so she could step in and finalize the 'guardianship' papers.

The sound of a car engine pulling into the driveway broke the silence. The front door unlocked.
"Lily? Tommy?" Sarah’s voice rang out, sweet and chirpy—a sound that now made me physically ill. "Mommy's home! Who's ready for a surprise?"
