Chapter 1 - The Locked Room

The floorboards of the hallway seemed to creak under my weight with an accusatory groan. I held Tommy tightly against my chest, his small, rhythmic gasps for air acting as a ticking clock in my ears. Beside me, Lily clung to my pant leg, her knuckles white, her gaze fixed on the heavy oak door at the end of the corridor.
"Dad," Lily whispered, her voice trembling. "She told us the room was for secrets. She said if we opened it, the secrets would come out and hurt you."
I didn't answer. I reached into my pocket, pulling out my phone to dial 911, but my thumb hovered over the screen. If I brought the police here now, if I turned this into a crime scene before I knew exactly what I was walking into, I might lose the chance to understand the why. My wife, Sarah—the woman who had been my high school sweetheart, the mother of my children, the partner I had built a life with—had turned my home into a prison.
I walked to the door. It wasn't just locked; it was reinforced with a heavy-duty deadbolt that hadn't been there two weeks ago.
I set Tommy down in his playpen in the living room and grabbed the heavy wrench from the utility closet. With a surge of adrenaline that surpassed any physical exertion I had ever known, I drove the tool into the door frame near the strike plate. One blow. Two. The wood splintered with a sickening crack, and the door swung inward.
I expected a storage room. I expected old clothes or boxes of holiday decorations.
What I found was a nursery—but not a normal one.
The windows were boarded from the inside. The walls were covered in thick, sound-dampening acoustic foam. In the center of the room sat a single, high-tech computer terminal, glowing with rows of streaming financial data, and next to it, a small, makeshift cage fashioned from metal grates.
Lily walked in behind me, her eyes cast downward. "She stayed in here, Dad. She put Tommy in the cage when he cried because he was too loud for the machines. She told us we were helping her do 'important work' so we could be rich."

I felt the blood drain from my face. I walked over to the terminal. The screen showed unauthorized access to my own private investment accounts, tens of thousands of dollars being funneled into offshore crypto-wallets.
Sarah wasn't just neglecting our children. She was running a high-stakes, illegal day-trading operation from a room where she kept our toddlers hostage, using the house as a cover for a massive cyber-theft scheme.
