Chapter 4 - The Ripple Effect

The news of what happened in the penthouse boardroom spread through the Sterling Grand Hotel faster than a spilled glass of champagne. By mid-afternoon, service elevators, staff pantries, and kitchen prep stations were buzzing with disbelief.

Grace Bennett sat on a wooden stool in the basement breakroom, a cold cup of tea cradled between her hands. She was still trembling. The shock of seeing her daughter standing fearlessly before the billionaire empire owner had not yet worn off.

The heavy metal door clicked open, and Evan Brooks stepped inside. He held two cardboard coffee cups, extending one toward Grace.

“You look like you just survived a hurricane, Grace,” Evan said softly, taking a seat across from her.

Grace looked up, her eyes bright with unshed tears. “Evan... a trust fund? College expenses? That’s hundreds of thousands of dollars. We can’t accept that. It’s too much. People will talk, they’ll say things...”

“Let them talk,” Evan interrupted calmly, leaning forward. “For nine years, you and Lily have been invisible ghosts in this palace, cleaning up messes made by people who make ten times your salary and possess a fraction of your integrity. Maxwell Sterling isn't handing out charity today. He’s paying a debt for the competence his own executives lacked.”

Grace stared at the coffee cup. “What happens next? Derek Hale is furious. I saw him storm past the front desk twenty minutes ago, slamming his briefcase against the wall. He hates us now.”

Evan’s expression hardened into cold steel. “Derek Hale’s days at the Sterling Grand are numbered. Mr. Sterling requested a full audit of hotel management twenty minutes after the contract was signed. Derek won't be managing a lobby by tomorrow morning; he’ll be lucky if he can find a job parking cars in Queens.”

At that exact moment, the breakroom door swung open wide, and Lily walked in, holding a small, heavy envelope embossed with the gold seal of Sterling Enterprises.

“Mom,” Lily said quietly, walking over.

Grace set her tea down and pulled her daughter close, burying her face in Lily's golden hair. “Are you okay, sweetheart? Did anyone bother you?”

May you like

“No, Mom,” Lily answered, holding up the envelope. “Mr. Sterling’s assistant gave this to me before we left the floor. He said Mr. Sterling wants to see us tomorrow morning in his private office, before the public galleries open.”

Evan smiled faintly. “It seems your daughter has a very bright future, Grace. And you do, too.”
