Chapter 5 - The Glass House Shatters

By the end of the night, the engagement was effectively over.
Ethan had not stayed by Vanessa’s side. He had spent the remaining hours of the party in the library, looking at the door, waiting for the staff to finish their duties so he could speak to Naomi.
When he finally found her in the mudroom, hanging up her apron, she looked different. She wasn't a maid anymore. She was a woman who had just stepped out of a firefight, her movements fluid and efficient.
“You weren't just a security guard, were you?” Ethan asked, leaning against the doorframe.
Naomi stopped. She didn't turn around. “I was a protector, Ethan. There’s a difference.”
“Why are you here?”
“Because I wanted to be safe.”
“You’re not safe here,” he said, stepping closer. “Vanessa knows something is wrong with you. She’ll have people checking your background. She’ll find out who you were.”
Naomi finally turned. Her eyes were hard, crystalline. “Let her look. She’ll find that I did my job. She’ll find that I never broke a law, never harmed an innocent, and never failed a client. Can she say the same for her circle?”
Ethan laughed, a short, sharp sound. “She’s calling off the engagement. She thinks I… she thinks I’m in love with the housekeeper.”
Naomi’s expression didn't change. “Are you?”
The air in the mudroom grew heavy. Ethan stepped into her personal space. He saw the woman who had listened to his grief, and he saw the woman who had stood her ground against his fiancée.
“I think,” Ethan said, his voice dropping to a whisper, “that I’ve been falling in love with the only person in this house who isn't wearing a mask.”
Naomi leaned back against the counter, her hands steady. She had left the world of violence to find peace, but standing there, looking at a man who was finally ready to be free, she realized that peace wasn't the absence of conflict.
It was the presence of truth.
“Then you should know,” Naomi said, looking up at him, “that I don't need a protector, Ethan. I’ve spent my life being one. If you want to be with me, you’ll have to learn to stand on your own.”
Ethan nodded, a genuine smile—his first in years—spreading across his face. “That’s exactly what I’ve been waiting to do.”
Outside, the snow began to fall over Boston, covering the Whitmore estate in a blanket of white. The ballroom was empty, the roses were wilting, and the life Vanessa Sterling had tried so hard to build had shattered against a truth she couldn't comprehend.

Naomi Reyes didn't look back as she walked out the door. She hadn't finished the fight Vanessa started; she had simply decided that the fight was no longer worth her time. And for the first time in years, she didn't just feel safe.
She felt powerful.
