Chapter 4 - The Predator’s Grace

The silence lasted for five heartbeats.
Naomi slowly, deliberately lowered Vanessa’s leg. She didn't push her; she simply let go, as if Vanessa were a weight she no longer cared to carry.
“My apologies, Ms. Sterling,” Naomi said, her voice perfectly level, carrying across the room. “You seemed to have lost your footing. I wouldn't want you to ruin such a beautiful dress.”
Vanessa stood there, trembling, unable to process the humiliation. She looked around, expecting the guests to laugh, to mock the maid. But they were all watching Naomi. They weren't looking at the housekeeper with pity; they were looking at her with a strange, sudden respect. Ethan Whitmore broke through the circle of guests. He looked from Vanessa, who looked like she might scream, to Naomi, who was already picking up a dropped napkin with total, unflappable grace.
“What happened?” Ethan asked, his voice sharp.
“I tripped,” Vanessa hissed, her eyes fixed on Naomi. “And she… she caught me. Too hard.”
Ethan looked at Naomi. He saw the cold, calm woman who made his tea. He saw the woman who knew his darkest worries. And for the first time, he saw the armor she had been wearing all along.
“You’re hurt?” Ethan asked Naomi.

“I am perfectly fine, sir,” Naomi replied. She bowed her head slightly. “If you’ll excuse me, I believe the catering team needs assistance with the dessert service.”
As Naomi walked away, the ballroom erupted into a confused, buzzing chaos. Vanessa was sobbing, her friends trying to comfort her, but the narrative had shifted. The maid hadn't been humiliated. The fiancée had.
