Chapter 5 - The Glass Fortress

The escape was a blur of high-speed turns and adrenaline. Nathan took his daughter to his private estate, a high-security compound in the mountains, but he knew it wasn't enough. Victoria had reach—she had tentacles in the medical board, the courts, and the press.

By the next morning, the news was everywhere.

MILLIONAIRE KIDNAPS DYING DAUGHTER FROM BOSTON MERCY.

The headlines painted Nathan as a deranged, grieving father who had snapped. Victoria was the saintly stepmother, giving tearful interviews about her "deep concern" for Lily’s health.

"She’s winning, Nathan," Elias said as they sat in Nathan’s study, surrounded by stacks of legal briefs and digital logs.

"She’s winning the narrative," Nathan corrected. "But she’s losing the ground. She thinks I’m just a man with money. She doesn't realize I’m a man who owns the infrastructure of this state."

"They’re coming with a warrant, Nathan," Elias warned. "The police are on their way. If you’re here when they arrive, you’re going to jail, and Lily goes right back into state custody."

Nathan looked at his daughter, sleeping peacefully in the room next door, finally free of the sedatives. He had hired two private doctors to stay with her, and the reports were encouraging. She was recovering, but she was still terrified.

"I'm not staying," Nathan said. "And I'm not running."

He opened his laptop and began typing. He wasn't logging into a bank account. He was logging into a secure, encrypted network that housed all the private communications of every major board member he had ever worked with.

"What are you doing?" Elias asked.

"I’m releasing the files," Nathan said. "The zoning irregularities in the Meridian project, the tax evasion logs of the hospital board, the secret offshore accounts of every judge that Victoria has been playing. Everything."

"If you do that, you destroy your own empire, too," Elias said, stunned.

Nathan looked at the photo of Lily on his desk. "My empire was a house of cards built on the illusion of stability. I’d rather lose every dollar I have than lose one more second of my daughter’s life to that woman."

He hit Enter.
