Chapter 4 - The Midnight Extraction

The hospital basement smelled of damp concrete and old paper. Nathan moved with the calculated efficiency of a man who built skyscrapers. He had the schematics burned into his mind. He found the maintenance shaft, his flashlight cutting through the dust, and began the climb.

He emerged into the supply closet on the fourth floor, his suit ruined, his hands scraped raw. He waited.

Ten minutes.

He slipped out of the closet. The hallway was silent, the fluorescent lights flickering with an eerie, rhythmic hum. He reached room 1204. The door was locked, but he had taken the master key from the head nurse’s desk—he’d orchestrated a distraction, Elias’s team pulling the fire alarm in the west wing.

The door clicked open.

Lily was alone. The room was dark, save for the blue light of the heart monitor.

"Lily," he whispered.

She stirred, her eyes fluttering open. When she saw him, she didn't recoil this time. She gasped.

"Daddy?"

"I'm here," he said, rushing to the bed. He checked the IV—she was right, it was a slow drip of something clear. He ripped the tape from her arm, his hands gentle but fast. "We're leaving."

"Victoria is downstairs," she whispered, her voice trembling. "She said she was going to get a snack. She said... she said you were never coming back."

"She was wrong," Nathan said.

He scooped her up. She was painfully light. He felt a surge of fury so potent it blurred his vision. How much weight had she lost in the last three weeks?

He stepped into the hall, but stopped cold.

Standing ten feet away was Carmen Ruiz. She wasn't surprised. She had a syringe in her hand, the needle glinting in the low light.

"You were always a stubborn man, Mr. Whitmore," she said, her voice devoid of its usual stern professionalism. It was flat. Dangerous.

"Move," Nathan said, clutching Lily to his chest.

"You can't leave with her," Carmen said, taking a step forward. "The paperwork has already been filed. You've been declared unfit. Victoria has power of attorney over her medical decisions, and you've been deemed a danger to the patient. If you take one more step, I call the police."

"Call them," Nathan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low growl. "Because when they arrive, they're going to find a syringe filled with illicit sedatives and a conspiracy that’s going to put you in a cage for the rest of your life."

He didn't wait for her to react. He charged.

Carmen lunged with the syringe, but Nathan blocked her with his shoulder, the needle grazing his coat. He shoved her against the wall and kept running toward the service elevator.

The elevator pinged. He scrambled inside, punching the button for the lobby.

As the doors closed, he saw Carmen screaming into her radio, and at the end of the hall, Victoria stepped out of the stairwell, her silk robe billowing, her face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated venom.

"Get him!" she shrieked.

The doors slid shut.
