Chapter 4 - THE HUNT BEGINS

The underground medical facility beneath the estate was sterile, brightly lit, and humming with the rhythmic sound of life-support monitors.
Dr. Richard Hale stepped out of the operating room, wiping sweat from his forehead with a blue towel. His surgical scrubs were stained with blood.
Alessandro stood against the concrete wall, his coat gone, his shirt sleeves rolled up, revealing bruised forearms and old scars. Sophia sat on a metal bench nearby, clutching a warm cup of tea she hadn't touched in three hours. Emma was asleep in a small cot in the corner, exhausted from hours of crying, holding her teddy bear tightly against her chest.
Alessandro stepped toward the veterinarian. "Is he alive?"
Richard tiredly pulled off his mask. "The bullet missed his heart by less than an inch. It cracked a rib and tore through muscle tissue, but... he’s a fighter, Alessandro. The dog should be dead three times over, but his vitals are stabilizing."
A deep, collective breath seemed to leave the room. Sophia squeezed her eyes shut, whispering a prayer of thanks.
"Can he move?" Alessandro asked.
"Not for weeks," Richard said firmly. "He needs bed rest, antibiotics, and time. If he tries to stand, he’ll tear the internal sutures."
Alessandro nodded slowly. He walked over to the glass window looking into the recovery room. Bruno lay on a padded table, an IV line attached to his leg, his heavy chest rising and falling rhythmically.
"He saved my family," Alessandro murmured, his voice barely audible.
"He saved his family," Richard corrected gently, looking at Emma. "Animals don't understand syndicate hierarchies, Alessandro. They only understand who makes them feel safe."
Alessandro turned around to face the room. The moment of vulnerability vanished, replaced by an aura so dark and suffocating that even Richard stepped back a pace.
Marco stepped into the room, holding a encrypted satellite phone. "Boss. We tracked Russo’s vehicle to a disused industrial complex near the docks in South Chicago. He’s reinforced it with at least thirty men. He’s setting up a defensive perimeter."
"He thinks I’m going to negotiate," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "He thinks he has leverage because he threatened Sophia and Emma."
"He sent a message ten minutes ago," Marco continued, his tone grim. "He wants you to hand over all shipping routes in the northern territory by sunrise, or he’ll start executing your lieutenants one by one."
Sophia stood up, her eyes wide with fear. "Alessandro... what are we going to do? He’s going to come back for us. We aren't safe here."
Alessandro walked over to her. He didn't offer empty reassurances. He reached out and placed his large hands on her shoulders, forcing her to look directly into his eyes.
"Listen to me, Sophia," he said, his voice an absolute steel thread. "For sixteen years, I ran this empire through fear and strategy. I fought men because they wanted my land, my money, my power. But Russo made a mistake tonight."
He glanced toward the sleeping child in the cot.
"He brought war to my home. He hurt my dog, and he threatened the only two people who have made this cold house feel alive since my wife died ten years ago."
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat.
"You and Emma are under my protection," Alessandro declared. "Not as employees. Not as staff. As my family. And no one touches my family and lives to see the sunrise."
He turned to Marco. "Call the captains. All of them. Chicago, New York, Philadelphia. Tell them the peace treaty with the Russo syndicate is officially void."
Marco’s eyes widened. "Boss... that means full-scale war. The commission will—"
"The commission can burn in hell with Russo," Alessandro interrupted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I want every warehouse, every dock, every illegal operation owned by Viktor Russo wiped off the map before dawn. I don't want a single brick standing."
"And Russo himself?" Marco asked, a dark smile beginning to form on his face.
"Leave Russo for me," Alessandro said, checking the magazine of his custom sidearm and slapping it back into the receiver. "And bring the heavy armor. We’re going to the docks."
Before Alessandro could step out of the room, a soft whine sounded from behind the glass door.
Alessandro stopped. He turned and walked into the recovery room.
Bruno had opened his yellow eyes. The massive dog was groggy from the anesthesia, but he raised his head slightly, looking at his master.
Alessandro crouched beside the surgical table. He reached out and stroked the heavy, scarred head, pressing his forehead against the dog's cold nose.
"Stay," Alessandro whispered to the dog. "Guard the girl. I’ll finish this."
May you like
Bruno gave a faint, weak thump of his tail against the padded table.
Alessandro stood, pulled on a fresh black coat, and walked out into the night, leading an army that was about to bring an entire criminal empire to its knees.
