Chapter 3 - THE BREACH

The storm hit the estate on a Tuesday evening.

It wasn't just rain; it was a gale-force tempest that battered the stone walls of the mansion, knocking out power lines across the county and turning the sprawling gardens into a sea of mud and shadows. The estate’s emergency generators kicked in immediately, bathing the hallways in a low, amber glow.

In the private dining room, the atmosphere was surreal. Alessandro Moretti, a man accustomed to dining with corrupt politicians and international syndicate heads, sat at the head of a mahogany table spanning twenty feet. To his right sat Sophia, looking elegant despite her simple dress, and beside her was Emma, sitting on a stack of velvet cushions so she could reach her plate.

Bruno lay stretched out across the rug beneath Emma’s chair, his massive head resting on her tiny leather shoes.

"He likes green beans," Emma announced, holding a single vegetable over the edge of the table.

"Emma, no," Sophia corrected gently. "Bruno eats his own food."

"Bruno eats whatever she gives him," Alessandro said, cutting a piece of steak. "Including three of my expensive linen napkins yesterday."

Sophia looked down, embarrassed, but the faint smile on her face betrayed her amusement. "I tried to replace them, Mr. Moretti."

"Alessandro," he corrected smoothly. "When you sit at my table, you call me Alessandro."

Sophia looked up, meeting his gaze. The warmth in the room was palpable, a stark contrast to the howling wind whipping against the tall stained-glass windows. For the past three weeks, Alessandro had slowly dismantled the invisible walls between them. He had arranged for a private tutor to visit Emma twice a week, ensured Sophia’s workload was lightened, and spent his evenings listening to the little girl explain the complex social dynamics of her stuffed animals.

He had begun to care. And in Alessandro’s world, caring was the most dangerous vulnerability a man could possess.

Suddenly, the lights flickered violently.

Bruno’s head snapped up. A low, guttural rumble started deep in the dog's chest, vibrating through the wooden floorboards.

Alessandro set his fork down instantly. His hand moved with practiced instinct to the inside of his tailored jacket, resting on the grip of his sidearm.

The emergency radio on his belt burst into static, followed by Marco’s voice—frantic, cut through by the sharp, terrifying crack of automatic gunfire.

"Boss! North gate breached! They used heavy explosives—they're inside the perimeter! It’s Russo's team—"

A deafening explosion rocked the east wing of the mansion. The stained-glass windows shattered inward, spraying colored glass across the marble floor.

Sophia screamed, throwing her body over Emma as the table shook violently.

Alessandro was on his feet in a second, his Beretta drawn and leveled toward the dining room doors. "Marco! Report!"

Static was the only reply.

"Get under the table!" Alessandro barked at Sophia, his eyes dark with absolute fury. "Stay down! Bruno, guard!"

The Cane Corso didn't need to be told twice. The old, arthritic dog stood over Sophia and Emma, his lips pulled back to reveal yellowed teeth, his hackles raised as a terrifying, demonic snarl ripped from his throat.

The heavy oak doors of the dining room blew off their hinges.

Three men in tactical gear, armed with submachine guns, flooded into the room. They weren't looking to negotiate; they were an execution squad sent to erase the Moretti name forever.

Alessandro didn't hesitate. He fired three rapid shots. The lead attacker dropped instantly, his weapon clattering against the floor. The second man returned fire, bullets splintering the mahogany table and tearing through the oil paintings on the walls.

Alessandro pivoted behind a thick marble pillar, firing with lethal accuracy. The second attacker fell, but the third threw a stun grenade into the center of the room.

The blinding flash and concussive boom disoriented the room. Sophia covered her ears, weeping, while Emma let out a terrified cry.

Through the smoke, a fourth man—tall, scarred, wearing a black trench coat—stepped through the ruined doorway. It was Viktor Russo himself.

"Alessandro!" Viktor shouted over the ringing silence, a cruel, triumph smile on his face. "It ends tonight!"

Viktor raised his weapon toward the marble pillar where Alessandro was pinned down. But before he could pull the trigger, a black blur exploded from beneath the ruined dining table.

Despite his bad hip, despite years of pain and old wounds, Bruno launched his one-hundred-and-thirty-pound frame directly at Viktor's throat.

Viktor let out a shocked yell, bringing his arm up just in time. Bruno’s massive jaws locked onto his forearm, the crushing force breaking bone instantly. Viktor fell backward, screaming in agony as he beat at the dog's head with his free fist.

"Shoot it! Shoot the damn dog!" Viktor roared to his remaining driver in the hallway.

A gunshot echoed through the smoky room.

Bruno let out a sharp yelp. His grip loosened, and he collapsed onto his side, blood pooling rapidly against his black coat.

"NO! BRUNO!" Emma’s little voice shattered the horror of the room.

The distraction was all Alessandro needed. He stepped out from behind the pillar, his eyes burning with a terrifying, demonic rage. He fired twice. The gunman in the hallway dropped dead.

Viktor, clutching his ruined arm, scrambled backward toward the shattered window. "This isn't over, Moretti!" he gasped, bleeding heavily, before throwing himself out into the darkness of the garden below, where an escape vehicle waited.

Alessandro didn't pursue him. His priority was inside the room.

He rushed to the table, sweeping aside the debris. "Sophia! Emma!"

Sophia pushed herself up from the floor, her hands shaking, pulling Emma tightly against her chest. "We're okay... we're okay..."

"Mommy... Bruno..." Emma sobbed, pulling away from her mother.

The little girl scrambled across the blood-stained rug to where the massive dog lay. Bruno’s eyes were dimming, his heavy chest heaving in shallow, ragged gasps. Blood dripped from a wound in his shoulder.

Emma knelt in the pool of red, utterly unconcerned with her ruined clothes. She picked up her tiny washcloth—which she had carried in her pocket all day—and pressed it against the wound, just as she had done on the first day they met.

"Don't go," she wept, her little shoulders shaking hysterically. "Don't go, Bruno. Bad man is gone. Please..."

Bruno opened his heavy eyes. With the last of his strength, he lifted his massive tongue and gave Emma’s tear-stained cheek a weak, warm lick.

Alessandro knelt beside them. He placed his hand over Emma’s tiny fingers on the wound, applying pressure. His heart felt as though it were being torn apart by bare hands.

"Marco!" Alessandro roared into the radio, his voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of panic and fury. "Get Dr. Hale here right now! If he isn't here in five minutes, I’ll burn his clinic to the ground!"

"Boss..." Marco’s exhausted voice came through. "The perimeter is secured. Russo fled south. But... boss... your car..."

Before Marco could finish, a security guard burst into the room, his face covered in soot and blood.

"Don Alessandro!" the guard gasped, looking terrified. "The east gate... they didn't just come for you. A second squad breached the staff quarters ten minutes ago!"

Alessandro stood up, his eyes narrowing. "What are you talking about?"

The guard swallowed hard, looking at Sophia. "They took the medical files... and the maid's records. Russo knows who she is. He knows who the child is."

Alessandro turned to look at Sophia. Her face went entirely blank with terror.

Then, out in the stormy night, the distant sound of an engine revved, followed by a radio transmission that had been forced onto Alessandro’s private frequency.

Viktor Russo’s raspy, pain-filled voice came through the speaker:

"You saved your dog, Moretti. But tomorrow... I take the woman and the girl. Let's see what your empire is worth when I burn it down around them."
