Chapter 1 - The Midnight Exodus

The Maybach’s engine purred like a caged animal as it reversed down the winding gravel driveway of the Lake Forest estate, away from the golden lights and the towering marble pillars.

Inside the back seat, the warmth of the cabin finally reached Evelyn’s frozen skin, but the chill inside her bones remained untouched. Her hands rested protectively over her swollen stomach. Inside her, the triplets stirred—a gentle, rhythmic tumbling that felt like a quiet rebellion against the cold world outside.

In the front seat, Harold Bennett gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles looked like bone. He cleared his throat once, the sound thick with a lifetime of repressed grief and loyalty.

“Where to, Mrs. Russo?” he asked quietly, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror to catch a glimpse of her face.

Evelyn stared out the window as the iron gates of the estate slid shut behind them, locking away the only life she had known for five years. Dante Russo had built a fortress to keep his enemies out, but he had forgotten that a prison works both ways.

“Not to the townhouse on Michigan Avenue,” Evelyn said, her voice steady, stripped of all tremor. “And not to any property bearing the Russo name.”

Harold’s brow furrowed in concern. “Mrs. Russo... you’re thirty-seven weeks. The delivery could happen tonight. You need a medical team, a secure—”

“We are going to my name, Harold,” she interrupted softly. “My maiden name. My old apartment on the North Side. The one my father left me before he passed. It’s small, but it’s clean. And most importantly... it belongs to no one else.”

Harold hesitated for a fraction of a second, then gave a firm nod. “Yes, ma'am.”

As the luxury car dissolved into the dark, rainy pulse of Chicago traffic, Evelyn closed her eyes. She did not mourn the man she was leaving behind. Dante had made his choice in a hospital room under the guise of noble rescue, trading his unborn flesh and blood for the manufactured innocence of another woman’s child.

She would not fight him for scraps. She would take everything that mattered—her children—and vanish into the dark.
