Chapter 5 - The Lion's Den

By noon, the seventh floor of St. Catherine’s Memorial was eerily quiet. A convoy of three black armored SUVs idled outside the ambulance bay, shielded from the press and public eye by a phalanx of silent enforcers.
Leo Moretti, securely strapped into a specialized mobile neonatal life-support unit, was wheeled out of the hospital under heavy guard.
Clara walked beside the transport unit, her hand resting reassuringly on the clear plastic cover. The infant’s vital monitor hummed a steady, healthy cadence—a clear, ringing declaration of life.
As they reached the rear doors of the primary vehicle, Dominic stepped forward, holding the door open for her.
"Welcome to the family, Clara," he said quietly.
Clara climbed into the climate-controlled interior of the van, settling into the jump seat beside Leo’s mobile incubator. She looked out the tinted window as the vehicle pulled away from the curb, merging into the sunlit streets of Chicago.
