Chapter 4 - Dawn over St. Catherine’s

The sun rose over the Chicago skyline, burning away the remnants of the midnight storm and painting the glass towers in brilliant shades of gold and amber.
Inside the seventh-floor NICU, the air felt lighter. The oppressive dread that had hung over the ward for weeks had finally evaporated.
Clara Hayes stood beside Leo’s incubator, adjusting the flow rate of a brand-new, unadulterated nutritional IV bag provided by a trusted pediatric specialist brought in from Johns Hopkins at dawn.
Leo’s color had already begun to shift from a pale, sickly grey to a healthy, warm pink. His tiny chest rose and fell in steady, rhythmic patterns.
The door to the pod opened softly.
Dominic Moretti walked in. He looked exhausted—he hadn't slept in thirty-six hours—but the crushing weight of despair had lifted from his shoulders. He wore his bespoke Italian suit, though the jacket was draped over his arm, and his tie was loosened.
He stopped beside Clara, looking down at his son.
"He gained two ounces in the last six hours," Clara said quietly, not looking up from the charts. "His system is finally absorbing the lipids. He's going to make it, Mr. Moretti."
Dominic remained silent for a long moment. Then, he reached into his pocket and placed a small, heavy velvet box on the steel counter beside the monitor.
Clara glanced at it, raising an eyebrow. "What's this?"
"An apology," Dominic said, his voice unusually soft. "For threatening you. For doubting every person in this building. And... for saving my son's life when everyone else was helping to murder him."
Clara opened the box. Inside rested a vintage gold pocket watch, engraved with the initials A.M. and a delicate lion crest.
"I can't accept this," Clara said, pushing it back. "It was my job. I'm a nurse. I protect my patients."
"It's not a bribe, Nurse Hayes," Dominic replied firmly, sliding the box back toward her. "It's a retainer. St. Catherine’s is no longer safe for my son. By this afternoon, Leo is being transferred to a private, secure medical wing in my primary residence, overseen by a medical team handpicked and vetted by you."
Clara froze. "You want me to leave the hospital?"
"I want you to be Leo's private head of pediatric care," Dominic said, meeting her eyes with absolute, unyielding authority. "Name your salary. Name your terms. You will have a security detail that answers only to you, and infinite resources."
Clara looked from the billionaire crime boss to the sleeping infant in the incubator, who let out a soft, contented sigh in his sleep, his tiny fist curled peacefully against his blanket.
She thought about the corrupt systems, the compromised doctors, and the ruthless world outside these walls. Then she thought about the little lion fighting for his first breath.

Clara reached out, closed the velvet box over the gold pocket watch, and slipped it into her pocket.
"My shift ends at seven, Mr. Moretti," Clara said, a faint, confident smile touching her lips. "I'll pack my bags."
