Chapter 9 - Epilogue – Dawn on the East Bluff

Three months later.
The autumn chill had settled over Newport, turning the maple leaves along the Cliff Walk into brilliant shades of amber and crimson.
Inside Grandma Catherine’s shingle cottage on the eastern bluff, the air smelled of cinnamon tea and burning oak logs in the fireplace. Natalie and Noah had fully settled into their home, the heavy ghost of past grief finally replaced by the warmth of security and belonging.
At the main mansion, operations had undergone a complete transformation. Under Emma’s leadership as Director of Estate Operations, the toxic corporate atmosphere had been replaced by mutual respect and efficiency. The staff no longer walked on eggshells; they worked with pride, knowing their employer valued loyalty above blind obedience.
On a crisp October Tuesday morning, Emma walked across the lawn carrying a stack of revised vendor contracts for the estate restoration project.
As she approached the French doors of the main study, she found Dominic standing outside on the stone patio, staring out at the ocean.
He wore a dark wool sweater, the wind catching his dark hair.
Emma stopped a few paces away, holding the files against her chest. “Morning, Mr. Mercer. The landscape architects are here to review the greenhouse expansion.”
Dominic turned around. He didn't look like the ruthless, brooding billionaire who had crept into the servants' pantry in the dark hours of a rainy dawn months ago. There was a lightness in his posture—a quiet peace that had taken years to find.
He walked over to her, taking the files out of her hands and placing them on a nearby stone table.
“You know, Emma,” Dominic said, his slate-gray eyes softening as he looked down at her. “You’ve called me ‘Mr. Mercer’ approximately four thousand times since you took over this position.”
Emma blinked, a faint blush warming her cheeks. “It’s professional protocol.”
“Protocol doesn't apply when we’re standing on the lawn before nine in the morning,” he murmured, stepping closer.
“Then what does apply?” she asked, her heart doing a familiar, fluttering dance against her ribs.
Dominic reached out, his warm fingers brushing a strand of hair away from her face, his touch deliberate and tender.
“Loyalty,” he said softly. “Truth. And the realization that the best things in life aren't found in boardrooms, prenups, or high-society galas.”
He looked toward the east bluff cottage in the distance, then back down into her eyes.
“It’s found right here. With someone who isn't afraid of the shadow, and isn't afraid to stand beside me in the light.”
Emma smiled, her hands resting naturally against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart.
“It’s a good thing,” she whispered, “that I happen to be very stubborn about finishing what I start.”
Dominic pulled her close, his arms wrapping securely around her waist as the autumn wind swept across the Atlantic, carrying away the last remnants of the past.

The mafia boss hadn't just returned early to test a fiancée. He had returned to save his family, reclaim his honor, and find a love that was real, unyielding, and earned.
And as the sun rose over the Newport cliffs, bathing the entire estate in a brilliant, golden dawn, they both knew that the true story of the Mercer family had only just begun.
