Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

Saturday morning dawned with a blinding, coastal glare. The fog rolled off Narragansett Bay, wrapping the Newport cliffs in a thick, ghostly shroud that made the Mercer estate look like something out of a gothic romance.
Inside the east wing, however, there was nothing romantic.
By 8:00 AM, federal marshals had arrived at the front gates with a federal warrant for Arthur Harrington, arresting him on charges of corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. Simultaneously, compliance officers served Julian Vance with termination papers and federal subpoenas at his suburban home.
In the grand bridal suite upstairs, Brooke Harrington sat in front of a vanity mirror, staring at her own reflection in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.
Her hair was half-styled. Her bridal gown—a custom-ordered Vera Wang masterpiece costing over a hundred thousand dollars—hung untouched on a velvet hanger behind her.
The heavy oak doors of the suite burst open.
Two of Dominic’s private security guards stepped inside, flanking the doorway like statues.
And then Dominic walked in.
He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He wore a dark charcoal suit, his tie loosened slightly at the collar, holding a manila folder in his hand.
Brooke spun around in her vanity chair, her face flushed with a mixture of hysterical rage and desperate pleading. “Dominic! What is the meaning of this? The ceremony starts in four hours! Guests are arriving from Boston and New York! You can’t do this to me—my family name—”
“Your family name is currently being dragged through federal court,” Dominic interrupted smoothly, tossing the manila folder onto the vanity table right on top of her Chanel powder compact.
Brooke looked down at the folder. She didn't open it. She already knew what was inside.
“Arthur has been arrested,” Dominic continued, his voice devoid of any human emotion. “Julian Vance is cooperating with federal prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence. And every single text message, email, and forged legal document you and your brother generated to steal my mother’s trust has been downloaded, timestamped, and archived.”
Brooke stood up slowly, her hands shaking. All the beauty, all the polished elegance, vanished, revealing the desperate, calculating grifter underneath.
“You ruined my life,” she whispered, her voice cracking with venom. “After everything I gave up for you... after all the months of playing the dutiful fiancée... you threw me away for a dead woman’s cottage and a grieving sister?”
“You didn't give up anything, Brooke,” Dominic replied coldly. “You invested. And like every bad investor, you miscalculated your leverage. You thought you could manage me the way you managed your social circle. You were wrong.”
He turned toward the door.
“Security will escort you off the property within the hour. Your personal belongings have already been packed into boxes downstairs. If you ever attempt to contact my family, my company, or me again, the federal charges currently pending against your brother will be expanded to include you.”
Brooke lunged forward like a cornered animal, screaming, “You can’t do this! I’ll ruin you in the press! I’ll tell everyone you’re a monster!”

Dominic didn't even look back. He walked out of the room, signaling the guards to secure the door.
The trap had sprung. And the house of cards had finally collapsed.
