Chapter 7 - The Fragile Truce

The attempt on his life in the garage changed everything. Dante realized that the betrayal was systemic—not just a few bad apples, but a rot that had spread deep into his foundation.

He moved his operations to the lake house, turning the estate into a command center. Ava remained in the east wing, guarded by two of his most trusted men, while Mara worked by Dante’s side, managing his affairs, vetting his visitors, and decoding the cryptic data that had been hidden in his own ledgers.

Late one night, as they worked in the study, Dante spoke about his past—about the burden of the crown, the loss of his wife, and the isolation that came with being the man everyone feared.

"People think I chose this," Dante said, staring at the embers in the fireplace. "They think I love the power. But when you’re in this seat, you don’t have friends. You only have assets and liabilities. Until now."

Mara looked up from the computer. "And what am I, Mr. Moretti?"

Dante turned, his gaze lingering on her. "You’re the first person in fifteen years who hasn't tried to take something from me. You’re the only person who has actually given me back my daughter."

The air in the room shifted. It was an admission of vulnerability that was more dangerous than any assassin’s bullet. Mara knew she shouldn't feel the pull, the magnetic draw of this complex, broken man, but she did.

"I’m just doing my job," she whispered.

"No," Dante said softly, standing up and walking toward her. "You’re doing much more than that."

Before anything could happen, the security alarm blared.

"Intruder detected at the north perimeter," Mercer’s voice crackled over the intercom.

Dante’s mask snapped back into place. "Stay here," he ordered, pulling his jacket on. "Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone but me."
