Chapter 5 - The Awakening and the Shadow of Doubt

The morning sun over Lake Michigan was deceptively peaceful. Mara woke in a guest suite that was larger than her entire previous apartment, the soft Egyptian cotton sheets feeling alien against her skin. For a moment, she forgot—forgot the poison, the restaurant, the basement interrogation. Then, the weight of the manila envelope on the nightstand brought it all rushing back.

She dressed in the clothes they had provided—simple, high-quality slacks and a silk blouse—and walked downstairs. The estate was humming with activity. Guards moved silently through the hallways, and the housekeeper, a stern but kind woman named Elena, was already busy organizing the breakfast service.

"Mr. Moretti is in the study," Elena said, not looking up from a flower arrangement. "He expects you at nine."

Mara found Dante standing by a floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the water. He didn't turn when she entered, but his posture was rigid.

"Ava is awake," he said, his voice devoid of its usual, practiced smoothness. "She’s asking for you. She remembers the star sticker."

Mara’s heart softened. "I’d like to see her."

"Before you do," Dante turned, his expression unreadable, "we have a problem. Mercer’s team did a sweep of the restaurant’s security footage after you left. They found the cameras had been looped. For ten minutes, the feed showed an empty room."

Mara felt a chill. "Someone on the inside?"

"Precisely," Dante said, walking toward his mahogany desk. "And that’s not all. Julian Vance didn't just sell me out to Marcus Cole. He was in contact with someone else—a third party. Someone who isn't affiliated with the North Side syndicate. Someone who knew exactly when to cut the camera feeds."

Mara stepped forward, her observant mind clicking into gear. "If it wasn't Cole’s men, it was someone who wanted to ensure the poison was administered, but who also wanted Cole to take the fall for it."

Dante looked at her, and for the first time, she saw a flicker of genuine respect in his eyes. "That’s what I concluded. Someone is trying to ignite a war between me and Cole to clear the board for themselves."

"Which means," Mara said, "that the people looking for me aren't just Cole’s hitmen. They’re whoever stands to gain from your destruction."

Dante leaned against the desk. "You’re learning quickly. We have a meeting this afternoon with my logistics coordinator. You’re coming with me. If you’re to be my administrator, you need to see how this organization operates—and where the cracks are."
