Chapter 10 - The Vow

One evening in late spring, as golden sunlight streamed through the arched windows of the grand study, Victor stood behind his mahogany desk pouring two glasses of amber scotch.

Emily walked in, carrying a stack of revised logistics contracts. She set them on the desk, stretching her shoulders with a tired sigh.

Victor handed her a glass, his eyes warm and steady. “You’ve been working twelve-hour days all week. You need a vacation, Emily.”

“I like working, Victor,” she replied, taking a small sip of the scotch. “Besides, who would keep you out of trouble?”

Victor set his glass down, walked around the desk, and stopped directly in front of her. He reached out, gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering on her cheek.

“I spent thirty-five years believing that survival meant building walls high enough that no one could ever reach me,” Victor said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant hum. “I spent my whole life thinking kindness was a weakness and power was the only shield that mattered.”

Emily looked up at him, her heart beating a steady, beautiful rhythm. “And now?”

“Now,” Victor smiled softly, pulling her gently against his chest, “I realize the only power worth having is the one that brings you home to the person who saw you when everyone else looked away.”

He pulled a small, elegant velvet box from his pocket, flipping it open to reveal a stunning vintage diamond ring that caught the evening light like a captured star.

“Stay with me, Emily,” Victor whispered against her hair. “Not as my employee, not as my partner in business, but as my wife.”

Emily looked down at the ring, then up into the grey eyes of the man the city of Chicago still whispered about in the dark. Only now, the fear was gone, replaced entirely by a fierce, unshakable peace.

“Yes,” Emily whispered, sliding her arms around his neck. “Always.”

And in a city built on smoke, shadows, and blood, two broken souls finally found a home in each other.
