Chapter 5 - The Dawn of a New Dynasty

Six months later, the Lake Forest estate looked entirely different.
The dark, oppressive shadows that had once haunted the hallways had been replaced by light, life, and security. The perimeter was heavily guarded, but inside, the atmosphere was warm and stable.
Leo was now a ten-month-old bundle of endless energy, crawling across the sunlit Persian rugs of the grand living room, babbling happily as he chased after a rolling toy.
I sat on the white velvet sofa, reviewing a stack of medical supply invoices for the local children's clinic—a community project Alessio had funded under my direct supervision.
Heavy footsteps approached across the marble floor.
Alessio walked into the room, his jacket off, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows just as they had been on that terrifying night six months ago. But there was no gun in his hand. Instead, he carried a small, silver-wrapped box.
He walked over, dropping the box into my lap before sitting down beside me and scooping a laughing Leo up into his strong arms.
"What's this?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Open it," Alessio instructed, a teasing glint in his dark eyes.
I tore open the silver paper. Inside lay a delicate, custom-designed silver bracelet. Suspended from the clasp was a single, flawless blue sapphire bead, polished to a brilliant shine—a permanent reminder of the night our worlds collided, transformed from a weapon of destruction into a symbol of survival.
"To remind you," Alessio said softly, shifting Leo onto his lap, "that you didn't just save my son's life that night. You saved mine, too."
I looked up at him, feeling the familiar, undeniable pull of the man who ruled Chicago's underworld with an iron fist, yet looked at me like I was his entire world.
I slipped the bracelet onto my wrist, the cool silver settling against my skin.
"Be careful, Mr. Romano," I smiled, leaning my head against his broad shoulder as Leo reached out to grab my hair with tiny, sticky fingers. "Keep treating me like royalty, and I might actually start believing you're a good guy."
May you like
Alessio laughed, wrapping his free arm securely around my waist, pulling me close against his chest.
"In my world, Claire, being a good guy gets you killed," he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head. "But keeping you and my son safe? That’s the only rule I’ll never break."
