Chapter 4 - The Confession of the Shadows

The nursery returned to an eerie, heavy quiet.

Dr. Rossi let out a long, shaky breath, running a hand through his hair. "A mess. The Falcones are getting desperate if they're infiltrating domestic staff."

"They wanted to break me from the inside," Alessio said, walking slowly over to the changing table. He picked up the sealed plastic bag containing the blue enamel bead, turning it over in his large, calloused hands.

Then he looked at me.

For the first time since he had pressed a loaded pistol against my temple an hour ago, the aggressive, terrifying mafia boss vanished, leaving behind a exhausted, profoundly shaken father.

He walked over to the rocking chair and knelt beside me.

"You saved his life, Claire," Alessio said, his voice dropping all its previous menace, replaced by a raw, resonant sincerity. "You stared down a loaded gun, ignored my threats, and pulled that bead out of his throat with steady hands."

"I’m a nurse, Mr. Romano," I said softly, my anger finally giving way to exhaustion. "Saving babies is what I do. Even terrifying mafia bosses' babies."

A faint, genuine smile touched Alessio’s lips—a rare expression that made him look remarkably human.

"You called me by my first name earlier," he noted quietly. "When you told me to shoot you."

"Did I?"

"You did." He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against my wrist where I still held a damp cloth from wiping Leo's forehead. "You have more courage than half my syndicate capos, Claire. I owe you a debt I can never fully repay."

"Just make sure your security system actually works from now on," I retorted dryly, though I didn't pull my hand away. "And maybe fire your IT guy along with the butler."

May you like

Alessio chuckled—a low, rich sound that seemed to chase the lingering chill from the room.

"Done," he said. He stood up slowly, looking down at his sleeping son with an expression of fierce, unbreakable devotion. Then he looked back at me. "You won't be sleeping in the staff quarters tonight. Move your things into the master guest suite down the hall. From this moment on, you don't just have executive nursing duties. You are under my personal protection."
