Chapter 6 - A New Dawn in the Garden

Two weeks later, the crisp autumn air of late October had turned the sprawling gardens of the Greenwich estate into a breathtaking landscape of vibrant crimson and gold.

The scandal surrounding Richard Arden and his daughter had exploded across the front pages of every major financial newspaper in the country. Federal marshals had raided Arden’s Manhattan headquarters, hauling away truckloads of fraudulent ledgers and arresting Richard on multiple counts of corporate racketeering and criminal conspiracy. Celeste had fled the state in disgrace, abandoned by her high-society friends the moment her family’s bank accounts were seized by federal regulators.

Inside the estate, the heavy, suffocating shadow that had hung over the halls for six years finally felt like it had lifted.

Down in the private restoration bay, a team of master mechanics from Shelby American had carefully transported the crushed remains of Owen’s silver roadster to a specialized restoration facility in Detroit, acting on Julian’s direct orders to rebuild the car bolt by bolt, restoring it to its exact original glory.

On a quiet Saturday afternoon, Lena Ortiz was walking along the stone garden path, carrying a basket of freshly cut white chrysanthemums for the main foyer.

Her cheek had healed, leaving only the faintest shadow of a pale mark, and her sprained wrist was completely free of the medical wrap.

As she rounded the corner of the rose arbor, she saw Julian standing near the stone fountain. He was dressed in a casual black turtleneck and dark jeans, looking over a landscaping blueprint with the estate groundskeeper.

Seeing her approach, Julian excused himself and walked over to intercept her path.

“Good afternoon, Lena,” Julian said, offering a warm, genuine smile that the press had never once managed to capture on camera.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Vale,” Lena replied politely, stopping on the path. “Mrs. Whitfield asked me to bring these fresh flowers in for the drawing room.”

Julian looked down at the bright white chrysanthemums, then up at Lena.

“How is your wrist?” he asked. “Does it still bother you when you lift heavy trays?”

“Not at all, sir. Dr. Vance cleared me for full duties last Tuesday. I’m completely back to normal.”

Julian nodded slowly, keeping his hands tucked casually into his pockets. But there was a hesitant, thoughtful warmth in his dark eyes that hadn't been there weeks ago.

“Good,” Julian murmured. Then, after a brief pause, he asked, “Are you free this evening after your shift ends?”

Lena blinked in surprise. “I... yes, sir. I don't have any special plans.”

“Good,” Julian repeated, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Because Mrs. Whitfield tells me you haven't taken a single day off since you started working here two years ago—aside from the week I forced upon you. I’d like to invite you to have dinner with me in the main dining room tonight. Not as a member of the staff, but as my guest.”

Lena’s breath hitched. She stared up at the billionaire syndicate boss, her heart doing a sudden, nervous flip against her ribs.

“Mr. Vale... I don't think that’s appropriate. I’m just a housekeeper—”

“You’re much more than that, Lena,” Julian interrupted softly, stepping a fraction closer. “You’re the person who showed me that loyalty, courage, and real human decency still exist in a world full of gold-diggers and criminals. I think it’s about time someone served you dinner for a change.”

Lena felt a warm flush creep up her cheeks, but she couldn't help the small, radiant smile that broke across her face.

“Only if I get to pick the menu,” she teased gently.

Julian let out a rich, genuine laugh—a sound that echoed warmly through the sunlit garden, washing away the last cold remnants of the past.

“It’s a deal,” Julian said. “I’ll see you at seven.”

As Julian watched her walk gracefully toward the mansion doors, carrying her basket of white chrysanthemums, he realized with absolute clarity that the dark, empty rooms of his estate were finally filled with light. The ghost of the past was laid to rest, the venomous pretenders were gone, and the quietest, bravest woman in his house had just rewritten his entire future.
