Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

When Helena unlocked the door of her cramped two-bedroom apartment in Astoria that evening, the weight of the day crashed down on her shoulders.

Clara was already sitting at the small laminate kitchen table, coloring a unicorn with intense concentration, while a carton of leftover macaroni and cheese waited on the stove.

“Mommy! You’re home early!” Clara chirped, looking up with bright, innocent eyes.

Helena dropped her briefcase, rushed across the tiny room, and scooped her daughter up into her arms, burying her face in Clara’s soft blond hair. She held her so tightly that Clara giggled in protest.

“Whoa, Mommy, you’re squeezing my breath out!”

“I’m just glad you’re here, baby,” Helena murmured, blinking back hot tears of relief and sheer disbelief.

Later that night, long after Clara had fallen asleep in her narrow bed, Helena sat at the kitchen counter with the black business card resting under the harsh glow of the single overhead light.

Five hundred thousand dollars.

It was a lifeline. But it was also a shackle. Working for Adriano Moretti meant stepping directly into the crosshairs of federal investigations, rival syndicates, and corporate back-alley wars. It meant trading one kind of danger for another.

Her phone buzzed violently against the counter.

She picked it up, her stomach dropping when she saw the caller ID. David.

She swiped to answer, her voice instantly freezing into ice. “What do you want, David? It’s past eleven.”

“I heard about your little stunt at The Calabrese Room, Helena,” David’s smooth, condescending voice crackled through the speaker. “Hanging out with Adriano Moretti? Have you completely lost your mind? Are you so desperate for cash that you’re selling your services to mobsters now?”

“My life is none of your business,” Helena snapped, her grip tightening on the phone.

“Oh, but it is,” David laughed, a sharp, cruel sound. “If you think the state family court is going to let you retain custody of Clara while you’re cozying up to a federal target like Moretti, you’re delusional. I’m filing for full emergency custody tomorrow morning. You’re finished, Helena.”

The line went dead with a click.

Helena stood frozen in the quiet kitchen. The threat wasn't an empty one. David’s family had deep political connections in Queens; they could easily weaponize her financial instability and her association with Moretti to tear Clara away from her.

She looked down at the black business card. The golden embossed lettering caught the light.

She didn't hesitate anymore. She picked up her cell phone, dialed the number on the card, and waited through two rings until a deep, steady voice answered.

“Moretti.”

“Mr. Moretti,” Helena said, her voice hard, resolute, and stripped of all hesitation. “I accept your offer. But we have one immediate problem we need to solve tonight.”
