Chapter 4: By Dawn

As dawn broke over the estate, flashing police lights illuminated the front lawn.

Victoria and Richard were escorted into separate vehicles.

The robbery had uncovered years of fraud, embezzlement, and criminal conspiracies.

Millions of dollars were recovered.

Dozens of arrests followed.

But none of that mattered to Emma.

She sat wrapped in a blanket inside the mansion library.

A few minutes later, the front door opened.

Her father walked in.

For a moment neither of them moved.

Then Emma ran.

He knelt and caught her in his arms.

“I was scared,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“You really knew all along?”

He smiled sadly.

“I suspected. But I needed proof.”

Emma looked down.

“I thought Victoria loved me.”

His expression softened.

“People can pretend for a very long time. But real love protects. It doesn't use people.”

Emma rested her head against his chest.

Outside, the storm was finally ending.
