CHAPTER 3 — THE FILE DANIEL NEVER SAW
From her suitcase Clara pulled a thick folder.
Inside were reports from counselors, teachers, and child psychologists.
Page after page described the same thing.
Leo was lonely.
Not abused.
Not neglected physically.
Lonely.
Painfully lonely.
One report included a sentence Daniel would never forget:
"Leo speaks about his father with admiration, but also with fear that he will eventually be replaced by work."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Every late-night meeting.
Every canceled vacation.
Every forgotten birthday event.
Every broken promise came rushing back.
"I thought I was providing for him," Daniel whispered.
"You were," Clara replied gently.
"But children don't measure love in dollars."
Leo slowly walked toward his father.
For a moment neither moved.
Then Leo asked the question he had been carrying for years.
"Dad... if your company disappeared tomorrow, would you still want me?"
The question shattered him.
Daniel dropped to his knees.
Tears filled his eyes for the first time in years.
"Leo..."
His voice broke.
"You are the only reason any of this matters."
The boy stared at him.
Waiting.
Not for words.
For proof.
Daniel understood immediately.
Promises meant nothing anymore.
Only actions mattered.
He pulled out his phone.
In front of everyone.
He canceled the international business trip scheduled for the next morning.
Then another meeting.
Then another.
Finally he turned the phone off completely and placed it on the table.
"I'm staying."
